“Ricki, you’ve been so kind and generous to me ever since we walked out of that jail together.”
“I’ve done my best to keep you safe in return. I don’t feel like I’ve been very good at it.”
“You’ve done a good job, Kamau.”
“Mmm.”
“The thing is, however good or bad I’ve been for this group, I haven’t been open about my history. And the more time goes by, the more I think that’s wrong of me.”
“I don’t think you’d treat me this well if you knew who I am.”
“What I’ve done.”
“Kamau—”
“Don’t. Once I’m done, then you can decide.”
“…Okay.”
Poor Ricki, today is really just trauma dump day for you isn’t it.
Relationship Counselor: the RPG. We better get a couple of optional romantic trysts like in Persona 5 Royal.
Ricki ‘best waifu’ competition, go!
It’s probably something, well not stupid, but something where Kamau isn’t really at fault. Like trying to protect a protege (his daughter? Someone else to protect?) Where he got overwhelmed and his protege got killed and Kamau fought against so many people he lost an arm.
Though I may get surprised, didn’t see the half-way transformation a few pages back coming either.
D1T29:
“My philosophy was always that fighting was the only skill you needed if you were good enough at it.”
“I used to think so. This is where it got me.”
My guess on D1T31: I’m guessing he’s blamed for killing an important charge, and he is going with it because he’s ashamed of not stopping the real assassin (or alternatively of not preventing the target’s suicide which would dishonor them if it got out).
This might also be our first look into what life is like when you’re favoured by the Empire.
