Intermission 5 Page 2

After getting their bearings, the party begins to navigate back to Lohk’s alley. They aren’t that far away in a straight line, but the maze-like streets of Goblintown force them to take a circuitous route.
Ricki notices that both Macadamia and Kamau have grown quiet. She understands that Macadamia is having a hard time accepting his new situation, but she isn’t sure what might be troubling Kamau. She decides to try to draw them both out into conversation.
“Hey Lara, everyone says you can only wear two magic rings at a time, right?”
“That’s what I always thought, I guess. One on each hand.”
“Do you know why?”
“No idea.”
“Hmmm.”
“Hey Macadamia, what happens if I put all three of these rings on one hand?”
“NO DON’T!!”
“Ricki, you could DIE!”
Interesting… seems the rings have a similar effect as devil fruit from one piece. Being too greedy for power can likely kill you. Explains why the imperials have dealings with them restricted…
Nah, I think the imperials simply want them exclusively for their army. If they cared about hazards of using them, waay more items would be forbidden. Like, half of our inventory.
Active rings can’t be too close to each other? or what? critical mass & huge boom? That would be SOO EXPLOITABLE 😀 Rings don’t count as inventory and spiders have 8 legs and we have near-infinite source of rings: Mac 😀
While I really doubt that ^, both Kamau and Mac shouted out immediately, and Mac seems totally freaked out … now I’m curious exactly what happens. Can we test it on rats? They have long tails. Sounds like close enough to fingers 🙂
On the Discworld MUD carrying too many scrolls causes them to explode. It’s a fun way to kill people who loot your corpse who don’t have the INT required to hold as many spells as you can.
Great to know some MUDs still exist!
Little bit of column A of: we want a monopoly on force and column B: we want our citizens to be safe…
Possibly with a little of column C: if people don’t know what’s safe and what’s not, the ones who DO step out of line are more likely to blow themselves up like idiots instead of becoming heroes that cause us Problems.
Ok, how do we put them on enemies? Can we forefully equip stuff on enemies?
The reverse theiving?
Nice idea. I did that a lot in good ol’ isometric Fallout1 and Fallout2. Of course it requires having high stealing skills. But there’s no better surprise than finding an active C4 in your pocket with 00:01 on display.
Classic.
I wonder if you can smif a ring using a ring?
Not yet. Look out for Ring Essence in Macadamia’s level up options.
Sounds OP. Hope it somehow actually exists.
DO IT, RICKI. FOR SCIENCE!
For real, though: there’s a TON of subtext that suggests the Empire in this setting *postures* as doing what it does for the betterment and protection of the people, but that a lot of its restrictions are purely to consolidate power among its upper class and to broaden the gap between humanity and everyone else. There’s a reason Kamau has PTSD flashbacks about murdering goblins. It probably has to do with why he betrayed the Imperial army. It probably has to do with Dungeon Eyes.
Point being: there’s a non-zero chance this “don’t wear more than two magic rings at once!” bit is pure bollocks. It’s quite possible the Emperor (brief may his reign be) has done this to trick people from wearing too many magic rings.
So, “FOR SCIENCE” is a joke, but I also want to find out legitimately what actual evidence there is that wearing multiple rings is bad.
If we can get someone we don’t like to wear three rings somehow…
…….waaaaaaaaait a minute….
WHERE’S DAISY?!?!
Daisy is a free and independent spirit, she’s got her own business to attend to. Just because she’s a dog doesn’t mean she doesn’t have interests! Passions! The big card game with her dog friends!
Clearly we are just seeing everything from Daisy’s perspective.
Time to talk about Kamau with rings. We never really explored that, he was never attacking and we only had one ring of protection so Kamau only wore one ring.
I joked in the wrap up stream that Kamau shouldn’t have trouble wearing two rings, he has two ears. An earlier comic had the rings show up as earrings, but there was already enough stuff going on in last dungeon that they didn’t make it to the character model.
Any magical explanation will have difficulty explaining why you can’t wear a bunch of non magical rings as treasure without taking up inventory space, but at that point it’s easy to say that after the first two rings then they start weighing you down for the same reason they weigh you down when not worn. It’s also possible that just shaping metal into a ring gives it some latent spark of magic which Ringsmifs exploit.
That, or the fashion guards show up.
You know I really like the idea that the looping nature of a ring is what allows it to have more efficient magical properties. That sort of also applies for clothing as well… *takes notes*
