Dungeon 9 Turn 47
————
The party charges into the crypt. Kamau cleaves through the pair of zombies fairly easily (with help from Golly and one of the mushrooms), while the flytrap eats that zombie rat whole like a snake would. Kamau and Golly both gain 1 point of Infection from the zombies, and Golly takes 1 damage as well.
Ricki darts past the combat and climbs up the narrow tunnel in the wall. She ignores the spider that tries to bite her face off and opens up the chest. Inside she finds a set of armour made from bone. She’s sure a use could be found for it, so she leaves her stake behind to make sure she has inventory space.

BONE ARMOUR
Armour
Def +1 against attacks from living creatures, or Def +3 against non-living creatures or hazards. Undead gain an additional +1 Def when wearing it.
Weight 2, Cost 20
Zombie plan continues apace.
Ricki: Equip the bone armor, since other than our spider friend we’ve got nothing but undead left in the dungeon (that we know of). Open the sarcophagus on your level so we can make sure it’s not a zombie, then head through the rat hole and then out to the right.
Botanya: Open the tomb on your level then head out right with Ricki.
Lara and Kamau: Double move to the right.
I’m only opening the tombs so we can make sure they aren’t zombies and that there’s nothing standing in the way of the zombie clear plan.
Do we know if the owlbear counts as a zombie?
We believe it does, yes
Unequip Ricki’s rusty shield too.
I’m surprised it hasn’t broken yet given how often that was forgotten.
Shield is needed because the spider is still there.
??????
Spider deals 5-6. Ricki has enough def to block that without shield.
Shield should be unequipped specifically because the spider is still there, to prevent it from breaking to an harmless spider’s attack.
I’m utterly baffled at any downvotes here. Isn’t this just simple math?
Ricki could take an attack from the spider and Coc (though I think based on obaerved behavior Coc should target one of Lara or Kamau. Without the shield she has 8 armor in her wolf hide. Switching to the bone armor changes that to 9 armor without shield, meaning a max damage roll from the spider plus the damage of Coc (who hit harder against Kamau than a standard bow shot, despite only doing 3 dmg to Ricki’s mushroom later) could cause a point of damage if Coc hits for 4 against living humanoids (which is my assumption).
That 9 armor is based off of the assumption that it’s a 0 defense armor (meaning light armor proficiency works) that gets bonus +1 defense if only attacked by living, or +3 defense if attacked by non-living enemies. If hit by the spider and Coc that’d be 3 +1 from light armor proficiency.
Aah that makes more sense. Thanks!
Are you sure that this is wise? Between exposing herself to the spider (because of armour change near it) and possible well equipped ghasts exiting the tomb (puzzle chest is still on “?”, so there is most likely at least one more around), Ricki might take one point of damage, if all the newly spawned enemies attack her and then Kamau remorses out.
When we’ve encountered enemies in the tombs, we’ve generally had at least one turn to escape, presumably because whatever rises from them takes a turn to emerge. As for the spider, it’s pretty weak. We also don’t know for sure if that’s what opens the chest–we assume so. It’s a valid concern, though, so if that’s what pops out, we’ll just have to dodge back into the tunnel. But we’re too close to victory with the zombies and we’re heroes, dontchaknow, so we have to at least check.
That bone armor’s bound to be useful for the final boss. Probably blocks incorporeal attacks, too! If we can get Kamau to wear it and interpose, that’s great! Also if we’re planning on healing him with Nectar, he technically has 7HP left if you count his Dauntless ability. I wonder if a paralyzing touch from a ghoul is negated by the bone armor as a “non-living hazard.”
What’s maddening is that, while I understand we are crunched for time and can’t handle too many paralyzing ghouls, if we’re still planning on wiping out the zombie owlbear, we’ll be finishing this dungeon with just a single spider and three ghouls preventing us from completely cleaning it. I understand why we aren’t, it’s just frustrating! I guess it’s also possible there are more ghosts in those urns, though, which we are ill-suited to handle. Maddening Thing #2 is that that green chest STILL isn’t opening. What the hell could possibly be needed to open it, I wonder?
I do think it’s nice that we are at least going for the heroism points for killing all the zombies. Coccyx *did* say “a warrior who won’t risk death in the name of victory is no warrior at all.” Maybe we can throw those words back at him after we wipe out the zombies as proof we are worthy of his respect.
Scratch the Kamau wearing bone armor thing for obvious reasons–Kamau’s current armor already has 5 def
Maybe the bone armour is what we needed to “find” in order to recruit Coccyx? I mean he talked about “curing us from life” or something along those lines (so it might have been the zombie cure, at least that was in the area that he got nervous about)…
If it helps keeping him safe(r) from living things, it might help him trust us, if we gift it to him.
Also, unrelated: I love the flytrap gobbling up the rat! It is so fitting and a thing of pixel-beauty to behold. 😀 Makes me kind of wonder if the lower part of it will be a bit bloated from here on out…
Imagine being eaten by a plant lmao
