Dungeon 6 Turn 23
————
Ricki and Macadamia work together to destroy another skeleton. Ricki fight bare-fisted in order to save her oxidicer for a more important fight.
Lohk and Lara meet in the entrance again, and Lara boosts Lohk up to the safe’s dial. Lohk can see that there appears to be a 6 digit combination. She enters 091116, but it doesn’t work. Immediately the nearby portrait animates once again, and the ghost takes a swipe at Lohk! She takes yet another 1 point of permadamage, leaving her at half her normal maximum HP.
Well that sucks. No more experiments until we have more info.
Agreed, so this is just for discussion right now: I think our lock count was too low because it left out all the unlocked locks. I’d say we started the dungeon with:
3 in the foyer
1 in the kitchen
3 in the library
7 in the basement
5 in the tower
3 in the tomb room
1 in the living room
That makes 23 in total – or maybe 21 if we don’t count the safe lock and tomb door, though why wouldn’t we?
I think only Ricky-pickable locks would count
Don’t forget that the squirrels (& maybe bats) might also count as rats. I think squirrels is quite likely since the beavers were rats as well.
From the we have:
Rats – 9, maybe +2(squirrels), maybe +10(bats)
Locks – 11, maybe +10(unlocked Chests)
Ladders – 16
Overall that’s too many combinations to try through (right now), so we should still look for either more info or a better plan
I would not count the ratking because a) it spawned, b) it’s unclear how many rats it should count as and c) it’s not listed under enemies as “”rat, …”.
Bats are not rats, and not even rodents.
Ricki and Mac: Kill Another skeleton using the same tactic as before – barehanded Ricki, Longsword Mac.
Lara: Go up the ladder and to the right, then kill the skeleton dog.
Lohk: Go upstairs, through the skeleton group, and try to grab the key. Daisy should be able to boost you up high enough to reach/knock down the keys with your cane, but if that’s not possible try knocking them down with the ray of frost. Pick up the keys if you’re able to do this as part of that action chain.
Lohk can’t actually speed up any of the combat we can access without having Daisy participate, and I’d rather not risk Daisy taking damage right now when we have the pet fight coming up. It’s better imo to have her search a bookcase or try to nab the keys in the library, since we still don’t know what they are. Once we’re down to one skeleton my plan is to have Mac and Ricki join Lara for the big skeleton group fight while Lohk searches bookcases and Daisy attacks the one remaining skeleton (Daisy can kill a skeleton in two turns which frees Lohk up to search a bookcase each turn, hopefully)
If its a 6 digit combination its possible the other 3 numbers we will need will be hinted at in another bookcase
Definitely a possibility! The only problem is that ladders and locks, assuming that clue refers to quantities, are two digit numbers. I think the more likely answer is that a further clue is modifying the first one (like +bats, skeletons, food), or that we miscounted rats in some way (like the rat kings counting for that total). Either way, it’s probably best to not try again until we’re sure we can win and have unlocked the door, and/or we’ve exhausted all likely sources of clues in the form of bookcases and have a good idea of what the combination should be.
There are still monsters under bed. If they count towards the door then they prob count towards the combo.
I just noticed LSN twitted “Five turn rule” on turn 22. It’s totally not a multiple of 5. What was that about? Was it because Mac found the hint? Crazy idea: maybe there’s some 5-turn-rule for the safe as well, like turning the safe’s knob five times (6 digits, so idk, one digit is used twice in a row, like ABCDDE)?
It’s a joke about our floor food eating I think. 5 second rule is commonly invoked for eating food that’s fallen on the floor and I assumed that 5 turn rule was referencing that.
ah, bacteria moving, rriighht
Can we flop the portrait face down, so the guy on the portrait can’t see what we are doing? 🙂
Good we at least know it’s a 6-number combo. We have half. We can assume the other half is hidden somewhere. We still have some beds, chests, and also some bookshelves to check. Should we start with second set of bookshelves? *)
And, I suggested it already, but I think we should check the other side of the note at the wall.
EDIT*) actually, the text says, 6-digit. So Lohk’s attempt of 09 was nice one, to make our 5 digits 6. This makes me think we should include rat-king from the bed, and that under other beds, we can have more rats. I just hope we don’t have to include spawned rats (like from rat king), it would be just awful, considering how random it could be. There’s also still an option that we will find another note with some hints. I’d check the pinned-note and other bookshelves as soon as possible.
Future idea: burn the portrait. It looks like it may be the cause of the perma damage. Remember that Ricki didnt see anything in the tomb when it attacked so it may be the portrait is the cause.
I couldn’t help but notice only 1 torch in the entire dungeon as well (bedroom)… Could be a hint
Yeah. That might be a good idea, better than mine “turn the painting face down”. Earlier, the ghost simply materialized and hit us. Here we see very well that the ghost is linked to the painting, it covered the safe, and even hit us for using a wrong combo.
I think burning the painting may yield something interesting, as the ghost won’t be able to emerge from it (so at least we’ll get some funny change like ghost-arm emerging from the safe).
However, I absolutely sure that burning the painting will have no effect on the 5-turn-1-damage rule.
I worry about what sort of retaliation we’d see for burning the portrait when trying incorrect combinations was enough to get attacked. It might still be worth it though.
I really don’t want to piss of whatever’s in it. No extra damage please!
To be fair, the ghost is already pissed and attacking us. If he could do more I’m sure he would
Ricki: Punch a Skeleton!
Lara: Go up and lift Lohk so she can pick up the keys then search a Bookcase.
Maca: Attack the same Skeleton as Ricki.
Lohk: Get lifted by Lara to pick up the keys then go back down and pick up the keys on the ground so see if you can then drop every key you have.
Pets: Attack the other Skeleton.
Note: I’m not sure if Maca can pick up different things from different rooms, but we can pick up as many things as we want in a turn and movement isn’t part of the action for the turn. Maca could just drop the keys if we don’t want him to have them, but having him pick them up helps us know what is and isn’t possible.
Edit: Picking up items in different rooms probably counts as different turns because it was said that near by items could be picked up together and they keys are pretty far apart.
I mentioned this on discord, but just in case I thought I’d say it here too.
Lohk and Ricki attacking together leaves a skeleton with 1 hp, which is a waste. 5 damage is needed to 1 shot a skeleton, so Lohk and Mac or Ricki and Mac can do it, but Ricki with her fists and Lohk can’t.
I also think having Lara come up here for the keys isn’t helpful. Unless we want to fight the rats and dog first, we need Lara in the other room to work on that group of skeletons so we can get to the scorpion. That group of skeletons does at least 5 damage, but we have some reason to believe skeleton dogs with humanoid skeletons are tougher than dogs alone. Lara has 7 armor, so having her kill the dog with her 7 or 8 attack will make the rest of that encounter predictable for the rest of the group.
Ricki punch, Mac attack skeletons, as well as the wolf spider! (It’s safe now for sure)
Lara go up and attack doggo skeleton group, with Lohk helping via range
The wolf spider and Lohk don’t actually speed up combat. Each one will do 1 hp damage to their skeleton, so we’d need to do another 4 damage on a following turn. The wolf spider also risks taking 1 hp damage, which won’t kill it but it does seem a waste to risk damage when it doesn’t do anything for us. It’s better IMO to have Lohk search a bookcase or try to grab keys. Both are things we want to do anyway.
In addition to any other actions:
Ricki & Mac – talk about how open chests work:
Was there a (now broken) lock in the debris Mac produced from the chest?
Could Ricki lock an open chest?
The idea here is to figure out if open chests should be counted as having locks
