Dungeon 5 Turn 38
————
Ricki and Kamau give their rings back to Macadamia to buff his meagre stats, then join Lara and her spider in focusing down the robed kobold. Kamau takes no damage this time, and the kobold falls under the massive attack. Daisy finishes off the nearby miner. Now that the entire enemy group has been knocked out, they drop three picks, a whip, and a strange robe.
Meanwhile, Macadamia sneaks back up the ladder and smacks the lone miner in the back of the head with an empowered rat fang dagger. This knocks him out instantly. There are no more conscious enemy kobolds in this room.

DRAGON ROBE, FIRE
Armour
Def +3 against fire damage only, and +1 damage when dealing fire damage.
Weight 1, Cost 20
WHIP
Weapon
Atk +1, or Atk +3 against large beastly creatures.
Weight 1, Cost 7
Guards are now in the mine entrance.
Kamau: move right, Interpose
Lara: Drop pickaxe, pick up Robe and Whip. Move Right, attack scorpion with Sword
Spider: Follow and attack scorpion
Ricki & Daisy: Move right, attack Scorpion with oxidizer
Mac: Move Right, Move Right again into next room
Everyone else, Move Right
Everyone attacking the scorpion (16-17 Dmg) should clear it for the kobold family to pass. Heck, an Owlbear would fall to an attack of 17.
Having Mac scout the next room leaves us open to take actions with everyone else in the new room since we’ll see what’s There.
We’ve never been attacked for entering a new room, worst has been enemies being alerted to us and attacking the turn after which would give us time to move Kamau to Interpose or Mac to just leave. Minimum risk.
Can you please have Lara attack with the whip, if she’s picking it up?
I’m fairly sure that the scorpion counts as “large beastly creature” and +3 (from the whip in such a case) is better than +2 (from the longsword).
Lara is using Greatsword. so its still +3 regardless.
Kamau Interposing lets every one else sneak by without getting hurt if we don’t attack and the Guards will take some of their time to kill the scorpion if we spare it. (if you can call it sparing when we’re letting some one else kill it. :P)
Guards kill scorpio on entering to a room
it will not save any time.
That being said the only reason to kill it is loot potential. Like Venom Sack for Lara use.
I wrote a longer post in the previous turn re scorpion. So just to make it short:
I am super sure we should leave the scorpion there. If the guards can move 2 room at time by spending actions/etc, they will attack the scorpion which will slow them down to max this one room. Also, in this room here we have the beetles, and I think the guards will attack them just like they did with Rusty — they could ignore it and just move left, but they attacked him, thus had to do just 1 room in that turn. I think we should leave both beetles, and the scorpion, just to slow down the guards.
This is moot if the guards can move only 1 room at time. I’m not sure about them. If they do, then leaving the scorpion there makes no difference and we could kill it anyway. However, if we attack the scorpion, it means we spend our actions – and we know we can spend actions for extra movement. If we skip the scorpion, we can have all our party members go past the scorpion and use action point to move to the room down, all in one turn, EXCEPT for Kamau, who will have to interpose at the scorpion.
Yes, the scorpion may have gland there, and it’s somewhat interesting – but Lara cannot use it yet, and also I think that both maybe-slowing-down-the-guards and speeding-up-to-the-room-below are more important.
Guard and dog in Dungeon 2 move 1 room at a time. Could be because they dont have dungeon eyes and the rooms are unexplored.
Observed guard stacking behavior is only adequately explained by no double moves. Only two guards arrived to attack the bats the last turn in the smif shop. Double moves would’ve allowed 4.
thx!
It was mentioned in the Chapel wrap-up stream that a side quest involved escorting an NPC who waited for enemies in the way to be killed before proceeding.
Now, we have a very different scenario here as there is a guard swarm of death immediately behind us, so the family may be willing to bring their young children uncomfortably close to a giant scorpion while the human wrestles it aside.
I will note that Interpose protects allies, much like how Remorse cares about allies. Not too worried about specific wording here, he won’t let anything happen to that little girl.
Lara: Drop both picks, then pick up the robes and whip. Get the lockpicks from Ricki and trade her your shield for her spiked buckler. Move right then down the ladder.
Macadamia: Give the ring of protection to Ricki, then if you have any space left pick up any picks you can carry left over from the miners. Move right and down.
Kamau: Drop the pick and receive the oxidicer from Ricki. Move right and interpose for the group as they bypass the scorpion. Make sure that your interpose also includes our group of friendly/neutral kobolds as well, and shepherd them on down the ladder.
Ricki: Make above trades, then wearing the ring of protection, wolf hide armor, and shield, run through the beetles to the chest behind them. Loot it. Run back to the left and down to the level below. If you have any inventory space open, grab a pick from the ground as you leave to move right and down past the scorpion.
Daisy: Guard Ricki – good girl!
Spider: Click, click hiss.
perfect plan like I imagined, and you even tossed chest looting there! wow, I forgot Ricky+Daisy have so much movement, they don’t need to spend an action to move through rooms
re spider.. I suppose it HAS to follow Lara, and we don’t need to say it? Or are you leaving it here intentionally to (A) ensure no problems with suddenly-stray spider at the exit, and (B) leave the spider as an additional blocker for the guards? It would actually lower our DPS, but maybe earn an extra delay if played well
Spider has to follow Lara. We can’t leave it behind (tried before and it didn’t work, but also explicit in the pet rules)
I wasn’t leaving it behind, just didn’t mention its movement as it had no choice but to follow Lara.
I would just put robes on Maca to guard against the possibility of there being a dragon down there that has an aoe attack that kamau can’t fully interpose next turn, and armor Lara up with the leather.
If you meant to go via hole to get to the chest then we should tell Ricki to be careful about the broken glass and the trap plates, right?
Indeed, it’s written a bit unclear, I think TNIM should edit and add a note that by “make a run for the chest behind the beetles” he actually meant running past the beetles, not just a chest by the beetles. That’s what this all added protective gear would be – to not need Kamau’s interpose. If he meant running through the trapped corridor, that protective gear wouldn’t be needed.. maybe.. it wouldn’t protect against glass, but it would protect against the crossbow-bolt-trap (we’ve seen that when it shot at Kamau and just bounced off). Hm. Alright. I don’t know what TNIM’s meant. TNIM, please either add explicit beetle route, or trap route, and call out for watching for traps.
It’s only technically unclear under the assumption, which we don’t “know”, that the rat holes connect. I was able to make the needed edits I believe – take a look!
Why are we rush looting past beetles when we don’t know their damage output? if they can stun like a ghoul we’d be in BIG trouble
I think this is unlikely because stunning doesn’t seem like something a rhinoceros beetle person does. It’s possible their attack will throw Ricki, but she has enough defense that they’d have to have 7 attack each for this to be a concern.
“the FAMILY of kobolds”: That is mean, that you let the lone, neutral kobold, who opened the wall to the family home for us, being attacked by the scorpion. What did he do to earn our hate?
Fixed! Sorry.
If we take this path, I’d suggest having Macadamia smif another Ring of Aggression using a pick while ending turn by the ladder down. I’d also lean towards Lara using a lens with the encyclopedia. Ricki gets the exploration for free and dungeon enemies don’t chase, there’s no need to spend all those actions on movement. I’ve added my own post with that variant as it is different.
Attacking the scorpion would force a character to end turn in fighting range, but there’s lots of space in that room.
we had our fun. Good job everyone on koncking out all Kobolds.
now time to run. Everyone has to leave this room now.
Equipment:
Lara: drop one Pixaxe and pick both Dragon Robe (is expensive) and Oxidicer from Ricki.
Ricki: get Whip (it’s cool and hopefully Giant Scorpio counts as Large Beast)
Kamau: swap your shield with Ricki spike shield.
Kamau: go to Scorpy (room to the right) and interpose
Lara+Spider+Ricki+Daisy: attack Scorpion
Mac: go [Edit: Right and then Down to new room]. If we are to take action next turn in there (and we have to be moving) we have to know what is there and we can’t be attacked while entering new room for the first time. He will be safe.
Mac can’t go two rooms to the right, there aren’t any. Mac should have dragon robe.
Time to run.
Equipment
Lara: Drop one pick-axes and grabboth Robe and Whip.
“Combat”
Kamau: move right and interpose scorpion.
EVERYONE ELSE: go right and then to next room.
plan based on assumption we can’t one shoot scorpion. I find it unlikelly tbh. but that’s another option to consider. If it somehow survives we have problems next turn. Kamau can’t move to new room after interposing.
Alright, kobold cultists and a dragon robe make it very clear there’s a dragon. Note that Lara’s Cloth Proficiency would work with the robe, as it gives +0 Def by default.
So, what will actually be there? A Flagon, a giant fire-breathing beer mug?
Flagon, lol. I love it 😀
Base plan from thisnameismeta:
Lara: Drop both picks, then pick up the robes and whip. Get the lockpicks from Ricki and trade her your shield for her spiked buckler. Move right, past the scorpion to the ladder down, and use the magic lens with the encyclopedia on the scorpion.
Macadamia: Give the ring of protection to Ricki, then smif another ring of aggression using one of the picks and the remaining copper ring. If you have any space left pick up any picks you can carry left over from the miners. Move right, past the scorpion to the ladder down.
If you have any inventory space open, grab a pick from the ground as you leave to move right and down past the scorpion to the next room with the kobolds.
Spider: Attack the scorpion while Lara stands back at a safe distance.
This doesn’t bother killing the scorpion and does some prep work, because Ricki can scout ahead with free movement and there’s lots of space behind the scorpion. The spider attack is a little greedy, if it forced Lara into melee that would be a problem, but losing the action is fine. Just in case we need to actually kill the scorpion for the kobolds to pass, adding a bit of early damage seems like a good idea.
I actually really like this plan. It gets better usage out of most characters than mine does. Only issues I see are that you could run into an inventory issue with Mac because he might not actually have a slot for a pick atm, and that we might really really regret not having a lens on the next screen depending on what the subject is.
I was wondering if we should save the lens for “The Subject” also. Having its info might give us some insight as to how to defeat it. I liked the idea of using Daisy’s speed to get the chest behind the beetles.
Ricki could manage that chest on her own with Dash, movement within a room is free unless otherwise specified. Daisy would let her take the rat tunnel to grab the trapped chest, though she couldn’t then take the tunnel back and also explore the next room two rooms away.
That’s why I wrote to smif in this room, where there’s lots of picks readily available. Inventory is less of a concern with no enemies around.
Lara’s 50/50 luck hasn’t been great with cigarettes, yeah. Still, the encyclopedia gives a reasonable shot at keeping the lens while giving us more intel. I could also see Lara taking the turn to drink the potion of rage under the assumption we need to cause some serious havoc in the next room.
I’m also not too convinced that the lens would change our strategy from “Kamau interpose while everyone else beats the Subject senseless”. We’re in enough of a time crunch that I don’t think we’ll take a full turn at distance to safely observe this new target before fighting, so any gotcha abilities would get us either way (like a fire breathing dragon which attacks an area ignoring Interpose).
