Dungeon 5 Turn 24
————
Lara opens the newly-revealed chest and finds a strange book inside. It seems to have lots of information about various creatures, but a lot of it is clearly made up. Still, it might prove useful, so she holds onto it for now.
Above, Kamau pushes the heavy safe one room to the left. That’s as much as he can manage in a single turn. Rather than helping Kamau, Ricki runs into the next room with a plan of her own in mind.
Having dropped her thieves’ tools once again and picked up one of the plentiful rusty daggers in the room above, Ricki drops the weapon for the giant bug to eat while she loots the chest. She finds a magic lens inside. Nice!
Ricki climbs partway back up the ladder before ending her turn, but she also notes that although the creature was very interested in her while she carried the dagger, it showed no interest whatsoever afterwards, even once it was done eating.

ENCYCYLOPEDIA APOCRYPHA
Tool/Treasure
When using a Magic Lens or a similar item or ability, this tome of dubious knowledge can be used to give the item or ability a 50% chance not to be expended but also a 20% chance to provide no information.
Weight 1, Cost 10
Reminder that feeding enemies does pacify them for the turn (no combat, no guarding items), so Ricki could’ve taken the shield this turn. Once enemies finish eating they can go right back to combat, so it won’t be safe this turn to grab the shield unless more metal is provided.
Pretty sure you’re misreading this.
“she also notes that although the creature was very interested in her while she carried the dagger, it showed no interest whatsoever afterwards, even once it was done eating.” sounds like a suggestion that as long as you’re not carrying any metal, Rusty the Rust Monster won’t aggro.
Which makes sense, since that’s how they work in DND
Point, it is unusually firm. I was still seeing that as “rest of turn”. Wouldn’t mind testing that with Kamau, but there’s no point since we have plenty of rust to actively distract it.
For me the way this turn is written clearly indicates Rusty does not attack anyone unless it has reason. Them carrying Rust (or metal, we didn’t actually check yet)
We sorta checked. It moved its antenna at Kamau.
Let’s make a rusty dagger on a stick and ride the rust monster.
While that is really cool (can Rusty climb ladders?), we should take care to not make this the top-voted post, please. (Because then we would really do that next turn!)
Right but consider this, how else would we get to that chest in the room… okay Kamau could give us a boost but riding the monster by tossing a rusty dagger up there seems fun
Kamau: Drop your plate armor, bucket, longsword and gold coins (gold doesn’t rust but why risk it). Pick up the rusty plate armor, rusty dagger, and rusty greatsword, then go down one floor to drop the rusty equipment (dagger, plate and greatsword) for the rust monster to munch on. Try not to leave the rusty items in a location where a falling safe could land on and hurt the rust monster. Hide your hilt and hope that the bug is sufficiently distracted by the feast you dropped to leave you alone. Help Ricki up to the ledge so she can loot the chest. Last time you boosted Ricki it didn’t take an action, so I’m assuming that’s the case this time too. If it’s unguarded, pick up the shield from the ground and use your action to move one screen up to join Ricki and Lara.
Ricki: Wait for Kamau to come, then give him the magic lens and wolf hide armor just in case you need the space before he boosts you up to the ledge to loot the chest. Loot the chest and then join Lara back up in the red base.
Spider: If you are smart enough to do so, pull the lever. Barring that, stick with Lara and avoid the pressure plates to the left.
Lara: Move back to the switch with your spider. If the spider can’t flip the switch, flip it yourself. Drop your longsword, the gold, the crit gear, and the new book you got with our other loot under the switch then move to the left to join Kamau and Ricki, avoiding pressure plates along the way. If you can push the safe down the ladder using a remaining action, do it, but only do so if Ricki and Kamau are safely in the room with you and clear of the ladder.
Of course Lara is going to flip the switch only ONCE. (Could be read otherwise, but don’t.)Thanks for the edit!
If we have Kamau help Ricki i would like him to try feeding his hilt to Rusty while she loots the chest.
Re-forging a blade is a whole ordeal.
but if we have empty hilt/handle it’s much easier to slot in new blade and considering how Kamau was a member of big organisation (guards) it should be standarised parts.
It is stated in the item description he won’t drop it for anything. Besides, what if it’s different metal than the usual for swords, and the blacksmith needs a sample so he can reforge it to its usual spec?
Not Drop.
Hold it as Rusty slurps.
Once again, I would like to remind about science and to try to utilize the spider not just in fighting, but with lever.
Lara: go away from the chest, command the spider to pull the lever. If it can’t then pull it yourself and then continue according to the thisnameismeta plan.
I tried to incorporate this suggestion, but LSN wants us to avoid long essays and conditionals. I think this is bordering on that but hopefully it’s okay.
One more option to consider: we can feed one piece of meat (or a future dead dire rat) to the spider. So see if it regenerates some HP.
I think meat should work (as spider is a carnivorous, right?).
And don’t know (jet) about eating rat.
Lets test if the spider can operate the lever!
It would also be good if Lara brings the lens (from blue base) to the red base.
Proposed changes:
Lara: item changes as before, but pick up the lens (&book?). If spider can’t flip lever do it. Move as before, if you still have an action peek at owlbear with lens (&book?).
Spider: try to flip the lever after Lara picked up the lens there
Hi?
for the second chest in Rusty Room.
Ricki will need help to climb.
Do we send Lara or Kamau with her?
Obv. both remove all metal they can, but Kamau will hold onto his Hilt.
Wishfull thinking: If we send Kamau he can feed metal in his sword to Rusty cleaning out the handle. Hopefully first step on quest chain to re-make his sword!!!
Whatever we do Ricki should take a moment to look if there are any leftovers from daggers. Did Rusty leave handles?
Turn 20 says: “It darts forward and starts chewing up the rusty dagger until only the wooden hilt remains.”
Why don’t we send the spider to try to open the chest?
We lose nothing, but gain knowledge about spiders and possibly save Ricki’s action to open the chest.
Because it will take Lara two turns to get to that screen, and if it doesn’t work we don’t have enough Ricki time left to get that chest. I agree the spider can try flipping the lever basically risk free but not this. We also already know pets generally don’t have encumbrance and can’t carry items so even if the spider can open the chest (big if) it probably can’t carry anything out of it.
Ok, I agree about two turns.
I want the spider to try to open a chest (even without an option to carry anything) so we know it can save an action of some other character. Then others can just pick up the loot.
From https://bit.ly/dungeon-eyes-mechanicsUnlocking a chest and looting it only takes 1 action: https://dungeoneyes.com/dungeon-4-turn-12/
I did some math with this encyclopedia.
Single lens use:
40% — information, not expended;
40% — information, expended;
10% — no information, not expended;
10% — no information, expended.
Repeated use of the same lens until expended/information received:
44.(4)% – information, not expended;
44.(4)% – information, expended;
11.(1)% – no information, expended.
Average lens lifespan — 2 uses.
Average uses before receiving information — 1.25.
Average effectiveness multiplier (per lens) — 1.6.
Average effectiveness multiplier (per turn) — 0.8.
Summary: the book is moderately useful if we want to reduce lens consumption in a long run, but ineffective if we have limited time / only one lense.
With the amount of inventory space we have right now, I vote we use both the lenses without the book for now.
Nah. Use it with the book. At worst we get a sellable item dropped on the floor and a very low chance of it spoiling. We have at least three monsters to analyze.
Just don’t let Ricki use the book.
Isn’t Ricki the only one who can use lenses and thus the book?Nvm, Ricki just gets to use them through walls.
Using magic lens on owlbear and crow seems like a good call once we get to it.
Only if we have enough time to do this.
Idea for after turn 25:
Push the safe down the shaft leading to Rusty’s home. Maybe the fall will break it open, and/or kill Rusty? Maybe Rusty will eat the safe so we can get at the contents? (If the shaft leading to the wanted poster room is in the way, we could try to cover it with the Blues’ gambling table.)
We’re definitely planning on dropping the chest down if we have the time.
What if we fed the safe to the rust monster?
