Dungeon 4 Turn 14
————
Lara gives her leather armour and shield to Kamau, who heads off to the right to clear an escape route. Lara then dives for the last chest, while Ricki unlocks the chest on (currently) dry land. Ricki finds some greaves and gauntlets, while Lara finds a gleaming golden helmet, the party’s third treasure! Ricki gives all the items she finds to Lara, who immediately tries them all on.
“So? How do I look?”
“snrk!”
“Pretty hot, right? What can I say, either you’ve got it or you don’t.”
Ricki and Lara head to the right, arriving just in time to see Kamau fail to kill a single measly rat.
“Oooh, a swing and a miss!”
“It’s not his fault. He can’t see in the dark like we can.”
“I know. That’s the only reason I’m still wearing all this crap.”
“You two can jump in to help any time, you know.”

Next turn, the third floor will be flooded. Will the rats from downstairs come up? If they do, the rats from lever 1 already are upstairs. Do we want to check the right room, or do we want to fight the three rats here? (Or split the party?!) – Note: If Ricki gives away Rat Fang and thieves’ tools and either shield or armor to Lara and gets the brandy and the helmet, she would have the necessary things to abandon the dungeon. (I do not want to do that, just noting it in case of emergency.)
Kamau: Interpose.
Lara: Un-equip helmet, attack plague rat using longsword.
Ricki: Scout room to the right, do not engage.
Kamau and Lara: Regroup on the right of the room.
Moment of truth, time to find out what happens to rats on flooded levels.
When I came here, there were 0 comments. However, by the time I make my post, I have been ninja’d by two people, one of which actually made a suggestion for next turns actions. You guys are incredible! 😀
However, I would leave Ricki in the entrance room, to see what happens, when the water level rises.
The lever place in the first room already flooded at turn 10. If the rats are bound by the same rules as we are, they cannot stay in the tunnel but must be either downstairs (drowned) or upstairs already or left by other means, me thinks. Therefore we should already be able to see what happens when water rises to rats.
I meant I wanted to see what the regular rats (and rat pile) in the 3 chest area in the entrance room do, when the water rises. If Ricki goes over there now, she should be able to see it.
Good luck on my part, happened to check the site just as the new page came up.
I’m reminded of the early Homestuck experience, when you’d refresh every so often and never know what you’d find. If not a new page here, there’s plenty of comments.
Alternate:
Kamau: Interpose.
Lara: Un-equip helmet, attack plague rat using longsword.
Ricki: Kill largest surviving rat, using Rat Fang.
All: Regroup on the right of the room.
If the rat pile flees the underwater room, then we’ll know there’s a lot waiting for us near the entrance. Hopefully they won’t get a surprise attack in next turn if they show up.
Lara has a long-sword, a great-sword, a wand and several abilities (some of which would cause corruption!), two hands and two feet. (And maybe she can bite or head-bang?!) Please specify how to attack, Sir.
Artistic freedom for LSN!
Edit: Attack with a longsword tho. Don’t break the rusty one.
You should edit your original comment to this effect
Very fair, fixed.
Ricki can kill one rat in this room and then go to scout. One rat less.
No, leaving a room after being actively involved in combat isn’t possible.
Attention! According to the characters page, Lara currently has attack +3, i.e. she is wielding the breakable great-sword. Do we want to risk breaking that now, or do we want to use the long-sword (plus 30% chance from gauntlets and 30% chance from greaves)?
No, we don’t. Please upvote Elymian’s comment that contains a correction about attacking with the longsword.
Lara needs to have 5Atk to kill Plague rat for sure.
So it will be better for Riki to give rat fang, coin and lockpicks to Lara in exchange for the helmet and brandy (just in case she will need to sneak past enemies and Lara will throw her the coin).
Lara gets rat tails from Kamau and them use rat fang special ability (+3Atk) to kill Plague rat. So she won’t need to use rusty greatsword.
I think we’ll figure out if the rats in room 1 left the hole to avoid water anyway. Because this room has the exit for the rat pile in room 3, which floods this turn. So scouting is maybe not critical.
Kamau: interpose. End turn on right side of room, outside the aggro area of the remaining rats
Lara: take off the helmet (we don’t want it to break!), attack plague rat with longsword (for science!). pass 2 sets of thieves tools to Kamau. End turn on right side of room, outside the aggro area of the remaining rats
Ricki: pass coin to Lara, walk past the rats into the room to the right, don’t engage any enemies
Well, we finally managed to get a considerable amount of loot in a single dungeon and fulfilled the requirements fo receiving a level up and bond a bond poun for every character. I think it is a great success!
While I am as thrilled as you are, that we got all the required 3 treasures, we’re not out of the woods/the dungeon safely yet, please don’t jinx it! ^_^*
Fun with math!
Two 30% chances for +1 attack doesn’t mean a 60% chance of +1 attack. It’s really:
49% of +0 (70% * 70%)
9% of +2 (30% * 30%)
42% of +1 (100% – 49% – 9%)
If you just need +1 attack like here (plague rats definitely die to 5 attack and might die to 4 attack) then it’s basically 50/50 (really 51/49).
It’s hard to plan around crits. Sometimes getting a better deal is good, though.
Looks like Ricki didn’t use up the tools, either. That’s 4/8 for Careful Thief.
Ricki’s ultimate ability as a thief is stealing Kamau’s Counterattack rolls.
She does this to break equipment also. 🙂
To be honest, as cool as it looks like, I really don’t want to get to know if Paws will count in the non-existent helmet as third treasure when it breaks before we get out of here.
I guess it’s been already suggested (I didn’t read the comments yet), but please, take off that helmet. Lara doesn’t need to go melee, she can i.e. venomous-something the rats at range while Kamau interposes, etc.
By the way, it’s a bit odd that Kamau can’t successfuly attack, but can successfuly interpose when he’s in total darkness. But I don’t mind at all!
It’s a head-shield! (See Intermission 3 page 6.)
2 slots for +1 defense is an interesting trade, if we got a regular helmet that we don’t need to worry about breaking and losing 16 gold and level ups. There is a point of diminishing return for high Defense, but we haven’t hit it yet. Inventory is in a good place now.
I’d guess that an actual helmet wouldn’t be weight 2 for 1 defense. Gold is particularly heavy, and that would make helmets a quarter as valuable as shields. Buckets also gave 1 defense and only weighed one, so I imagine a real helmet functions similarly.
I’m guessing it’s more of an ornamental thing, than really a piece of equipment meant to wear into battle (gold is also a -very- soft metal, compared to those usually used to craft protective gear, hence the 30 % break chance I’m assuming, on top of the weight).
Anyways. Getting very much ahead of myself, but thinking/daydreaming about the future:
Between the 16 gold we get from the helmet and the 15 for the booze, we will be able to afford the plate armour (30 coins) and still have a little left to spend (3 more coins from the rusty great sword at least, possibly 8,5 more from the wand, if we decide to sell it, maybe 2,5 more from one set of thieves tools – we will get another one for free at the start of the next dungeon and Ricki has been really careful with this set.) and let’s not forget our third treasure, the COIN. 😀
16+15+1 = 32 +3 + 8,5 + 2,5 = 46
46 – 30 = 16, that would be enough for 2-3 copper rings (5 gold each) while still leaving us a bit of money to spend on food (1-6 coins)
Or should we keep the wand to gift to Lohk? Ricki wanted to give the wand of magic missle to her, but of course it broke the instant Ricki used it.
On the other hand, Lohk seems pretty skilled at healing (remember how she patched up Kamau, before the chapel?), so she might not have a use for this kind of wand.
We could also grab the chain armour (23) instead of the plate. It’s bound to give less protection than the plate (rusty chain gives 3, I’m counting on a non-rusty chain to do the same, so plate might give 4 Def), but on the other hand we could lend a 3 WEIGHT armour to Ricki in a tight spot to give her one more point of defense (2 from leather armour and light armour proficiency vs. 3 from chain armour), while still leaving her room for a weapon and a shield. She’d no longer be able to use “sneak” while wearing the chain armour, but then again, she doesn’t even have that skill (yet), so no sense worrying about that just yet.
Hrm, I wonder…
Since Kamau only has one arm and Ricki almost exclusively uses daggers (which are a one-hand weapon, after all), could we split the pair of crit gloves between them?
I’m almost 100% certain that LSN is going to rule “NO” on that (remember the oven mitts?), but at least it’s fun to think about…
