Dungeon 4 Turn 12
————
After leaving behind her weapons and rat tails, and picking up the thieves’ tools, Ricki goes back through the rat tunnel, wades through the rat pile, and unlocks the chest (without expending the tools). Inside she finds… a single gold coin. Though thoroughly disappointed, Ricki realizes that this coin DOES technically count as a treasure…
Kamau holds the beaver back as it tries to attack Lara (or maybe her shield?), then Lara stabs it to death. The beavers drop no treasure, but with them gone, the chests they were guarding can now be accessed with no risks.
Lmao ricki’s face is priceless
I can’t say I blame her for being disappointed. I mean the thieves tools alone cost 5 coins to buy, imagine using them (and spending them! – we didn’t in this case, but it would have been possible) and then get a single lousy coin, one FIFTH of the investment necessary in order to get it, out of that.
On the other hand, if LSN points out that it does technically count as “treasure”, I guess that means we got 2 out of 3 for achieving the dungeon goal. Yay?
Yep, Gold Coin sure is a Treasure-type item. The important part is that we found it here.
We’re up to 19 gold of spending money (15 brandy, 3 greatsword, 1 coin), plus how I’m happy with getting a Shield for free. Effectively 39 gold from this dungeon so far, and now we cash in on another cache.
Agreed, it was well worth going to this dungeon so far. Free (unbreakable!) shield is amazing, that’s 20 coins we don’t have to spend.
Just out of curiosity: did you deduct the 10 coins we “spent” by using up the “tarnished sunsphere” consumable in your calculations?
And looking ahead already quite a bit I would very much like to try and keep some gold “in pocket” after our next visit to Paws’s shop. The way Kamau smelled “longingly” at the soup (at least that’s how I interpreted that picture) in the intermission, it makes me think there should be an opportunity to buy food (if we have coins left) and I don’t want any of our characters (or Lohk, for that matter) to end up with the “malnourished” status again.
Yeah, I think we should try to ask Paws about buying food if nothing else. The calculation also doesn’t include the rat fang, which itself is worth 5 gold if nothing else (so a profit of 34 gold if we for some reason sold the fang). We also might find some way to repair the greatsword (there was vague speculation the wand of mending might have that ability). Since I think this it he first time we’ve brought back a rusted item, now would be our first chance to really learn this by showing the item to Paws.
I did not add the cost of the Sun Sphere, nor anything for Rat Fang as we can’t purchase it. We became cash-positive on the sun sphere with the brandy, spent 10 gold for 15 plus a unique weapon.
If Lara go to chests under water and one of them is trapped dealing unblockable damage to her then that will be the last remorse point for Kamau.
So it will be wise to keep her away from the task.
We’ve been told here that we can access the chests with no risks.
Not sure if accessing and opening is the very same in this situation, but, well, let’s see.
Also, please, give IMPERIAL RESERVE BRANDY to Lara or Ricki.
[Deleted.]
Kamau: breathe, give IMPERIAL RESERVE BRANDY to Lara, loot the first chest and get back to breathe again.
Ricki: go to room 2, take long sword, kick Plague rat (+3Atk)
Lara: go to room 2, take Rat Fang and tails, shoot Plague rat with magic (it will die)
Without Kamau interposing, she can be swarmed. I’m not sure her def is up to it
Ricki should double move to the locked chest on the third screen. Kamau should pass the brandy to Lara, and then Lara and Kamau should safely each loot an unlocked chest, then catch their breath at the ladder.
I suggest Ricki grabs Rat Fang on the way, just in case.
Kamau can hold onto thieves tools now. Ricki is supposed to still have her set, so that’s all we need for the rest of the dungeon; we can free up Lara’s inventory and it’s no big problem if we lose access to the spare tools.
Ricki can’t hold the item from the looted chest then, but we can always specify she passes that item to Lara or someone. I was planning on having Kamau grab those items on turn 14 because he has nothing better to do anyway.
Better to not let the rat-killer weapon in plain view of the rats for very long.
Let them be scared. Maybe some will get a heart attack.
Or they could dispose of it…
With a shield, Kamau has def. 5 and cannot be hurt by the rat/Plague Rat/rat combo. With a longsword he can kill a Plague rat in 1 turn. He could pick up unattended items as well as kill that rat (if he hits in the darkness at all). (In a later turn, not now!!!)
https://dungeoneyes.com/dungeon-4-turn-12/#comment-3529 suggests the same moves and actions, but additionally takes care of stuff in inventories and on floors.
Ricki: Go through the hole, leave everything on the floor, and double move left to the other locked chest
Kamau: Loot the middle chest, then surface for air
Lara: Loot the left chest, then surface for air
We can leave stuff on the floor for now, we still have time until turn 15.
Let’s open all the chests first, then we can work together to make our way out (with Kamau interposing)
Note: What is everything? This command would leave her nekkid and defenseless. I would suggest you specify
Also, I suggest an update: leave those items at the topmost level, not at the second one. This way we don’t have to worry about anything getting wet.
@CombatDoctor: If Ricki throws away the thieves’ tool after use (NO YOU DON’T!), she has two free inventory slots. Otherwise there is one free slot. If she needs more space, she can lay down whatever she wants next to the chest, and Kamau and Laura both can fetch up anything without time/turn/action cost, because movement in one room as well as picking up unguarded items are free actions. Therefore she could even pick up one item she left on the top floor. No need to lay down more stuff at a place where we cannot see it, and especially no need to put it on a floor which we only have two turns to fetch it before it is flooded. (Yes, we can make Ricki dive. In “poo water”. When it is not necessary. Please don’t.)
Kamau: Trade brandy for a set of thieves tools, loot leftmost underwater chest, end above water. Pass any Treasure items to Lara.
Lara: Loot rightmost underwater chest, prioritizing ending above water.
Ricki: Go through rat hole, retrieve Rat Fang and tails (leave thieves tools with the longsword assuming those are supposed to be in your inventory). Use a rat tail to empower Rat Fang and kill the plague rat.
This gives us insurance just in case the room 3 rat pile retreats through the rat tunnel when flooded on turn 15. Ricki ends turn 14 with unlocking the room 3 chest (text says she didn’t use up her tools, but they aren’t in her inventory…), while Kamau can loot and move right while Lara moves right and kills one small rat. Turn 15 might have some waste, we want to scout room 1 but we can’t be sure what enemies are waiting. Having Ricki dash this turn instead would let us end turn 15 with everyone by the exit.
I also really want to see the visual effect of unleashed Rat Fang.
Hm.. let’s run some imagination dice
Ricky stabs the rat’s tail with the Rat Fang, pinning it to the floor, then swiftly wraps a single rat tail around rat’s head and strangles it to death. Unfortunatelly, the rat tail is damaged in the process and afterwards doesn’t remind anything usable at all.
(The tail which was pinned to the ground with Rat Fang unfortunatelly also suffers some damage due to all the frantic pulling when strangled rat tried to free itself. If Ricky managed to pin it down right at the rat’s buttocks, then maybe the tail could be preserved)
So.. Yea-nah.. I suppose it will be some combat-skill-item-consuming-magic–blueish-puff!
I vote for fighting rats (room 2) before turn 15.
But you overrated Ricki’s possibility to kill Plague rat with one strike. That will be +1 +3 = +4Atk right? But it has to be +5Atk to kill it.See turn-5 and turn-6. It was hit twice with +3Atk and it remained alive…I think it has 2Def and 3HP.Upd. Looks like I miscalculated. (if rat tail really gives +3Atk in addition to +2 against rats)
The rat fang gets +1 against rats, making it +2. Using the rat tail adds +3 for a total of 6 damage. Even without the +1 against rats, it’d still be +5 from the base +1 and the rat tail.
On turn 5, Kamau could not kill a plague rat when attacking with the shield for 3+0. Next turn, Lara killed the injured plague rat with 2+2 while Kamau killed the uninjured plague rat for 3+2. Could be 4 HP 1 Def, haven’t tried hitting for just 4 so they could be the same 3/1 as dire rats.
Empowered Rat Fang hits for 1(Ricki base)+1(dagger)+1(rat bane)+3.
Agree to turns 5-6 explanation.
If Rat Fang really gives +3 IN ADDITION to +2 against rats then this part is also true (and the Rat Fang is a really cool staff which worth much more than 10 gold coins).
Character sheet has been updated, tools are definitely available on Ricki.
Also:
Careful Thief: 3/7
Counterattack: 1/10
Ricki: go through the rat tunnel to the middle room, pick up the longsword, go to the left room (the general area where Kamau and Lara are), stay on “dry land”. Pass the coin to Lara and the longsword to Kamau. Unlock and loot the locked chest on level 2 (counted from above) with the thieves tools (and keep them).
Kamau: accept longsword from Ricki, accept set of thieves tools from Lara, pass treasure booze to Lara. Loot the leftmost chest on level 3 (counted from above), get back to “dry land”.
Lara: accept coin from Ricki, pass one set of thieves tools to Kamau. Loot the middle chest on level 3 (counted from above), get back to “dry land”.
By picking up the longsword on the way to her team mates, Ricki can “minimize” the amount of stuff lying around (and being at risk at getting forgotten).
I’m also rearranging the inventory some more, keeping the treasures on Lara for now (since Ricki only has 5 slots and Kamau may still bail due to remorse), but also passing one set of thieves tools to Kamau, so Lara will have room for more stuff (she should end up with 3 slots for loot from the chest after the swaps).
We only got 2 more locked chests in this dungeon (other than the one Ricki is going to open in turn 13) and BOTH are not accessible to us (because of grates and tons of enemies), so we will most likely not need them anymore. But just in case Ricki uses up the one she has on her atm and we need one more set for whatever reason (and Kamau bails due to remorse), I’m keeping one set on Lara.
If this does not become the top voted comment, please re-post the inventory swaps again in next turn. Then everybody should be in the same room and not in combat, therefore exchange would cost neither action nor movement (i.e. no time).
It’s only logical, but still baffless me a bit, that when I change from an upvote to a downvote, the comment score gets effectively by -2. SO much POWER (oO)
Can Ricki use the thieves tools to break or jam the lever that sets the Rat King free? If so, do it before leaving. I’m afraid the King can manipulate the lever from the area above. I know the rats don’t have Dungeon Eyes to see what is going on in the rest of the room, but they might be used to the water level changing, and I don’t think the King would trap himself inside a space that he knows is about to flood.
To me, there is a chance that grate will come down before turn 15, and that might put the characters at risk when they attemp to leave the room.
Nice catch. But jamming the lever won’t doesn’t make much sense to me. It would jam the control mechanism, what if the rats have another lever/etc hidden there, that as well controls the grate? If what you imagine is plausible, then this is more likely than ‘accessing the lever remotely’ (except for the king-rat somehow ordering the pile-of-rats to flip the lever – which apart from the LoS problems, isn’t that stupid either. If we assume the rat-king trained the rats and prepared some commands before the battle, a simple loud squeak/etc could be enough, and that could actually be a reason for killing that rat pile).
However, I think it’s better to try to jam the grate itself. Lockpicks may be not enough, but if we could run a sword or dagger through the grate, or into some floor/wall holes that the grate slides through, then it could jam itself when someone tries to open it, and the rats might have quite a problem with freeing themselves.
Omg. Kamau gives a hug to a beaver on its death bed. Soo touching! :sob:
Hey. The text doesn’t mention any breathing. Either LSN forgot to mention it, just because it was obvious, or else we should start the next turn with very clear and very intentional movement-type action of “stick your head out of the water and breathe” for both Lara and Kamau.
By the way, did you know that rat tail is a TREAUSE? (check the “Items” page)
This means we have already fulfilled the 3-treasure requirement!
Yes, some of the guys here noticed that almost immediately, I think it was turn 0 or 1, and we got some LOLs as there’s a lot of rats here. However, the general conclusion was that probably rat tails are specifically excluded as they have “Cost -” so it’s kind of a trash-treasure.
Oh, I didn’t nitice that conversation. But I think that something labeled as a “treasure” is still a treasure no matter the cost.
Turn 7, the turn after Lara picks up two rat tails, we get this:
“Hey, look what I found lying in that chest! This stuff is never supposed to leave the Emperor’s Tower!”
“It’s not supposed to be submerged in poo water either, so think twice before putting that bottle to your lips.”
“I don’t think this is actually poo water, Lara.” “With this many rats around? Trust me, it’s poo water.”
The team has now collected one of the three treasures they need in order to call this mission a success!
Rat tails don’t count.
And Paws spoke of “three nice pieces”. Well, maybe someone has another point of view, but I do not deem rat tails as “nice piece”. And when getting the brandy, we were explicitely told that we got treasure. When we got rat tails: no congratulations.
I have an opinion about this “wonderful” 1-coin treasuse:
LOL. Don’t tell me that’s from WSWfG (i.e. imaginary version of tribal island, etc when Odie was mentally tortured by the nightmare monster?) and I didn’t notice it.
I think Forty Five found this message when he finally joined the party. Hilarious
It is from the real island. This message was designed by Ardon for Fortyfive.

Ardon is truly an unceasing source of picturesque insults.
Oooooh THANK YOU. I did noticed it back then, but I forgot. That “left a sign for toaster” totally reminded me this. Jesus. 2013. Seeing that year there feels almost like reading twokinds’ archives.
EDIT: I checked archives. 2K is @2003. In my country it’d be officially an adult. Then, I checked UserFriendly (so sad it was taken down recently, I have to find a mirror/backup..), and it was ran since 1997. Mind blown. And astonished. I. Feel. Ancient (oO).
Am I the only one who thinks it was/is possible to try to make pet out of the/a beaver?
Just an idea… But 4HP 2Atk pet is better then a +2Def shield, I think.
Heck yeah! One whole coin!
