Dungeon 3 Turn 44
————
While Ricki tries to decide whether to throw her dagger or a holy bolt, Kamau continues to engage the spider in melee. He once again deals only minor damage, and the spider deals 1 damage to him in turn.
Kamau decides that he’s taken enough damage.
His Counterattack ability activates, and the spider is utterly obliterated.
Go team! Does the corpse have anything worth keeping? Coat sword with spider poison?
Ricki: Check chest for traps, then step back
Kamau: If no traps, open the chest
Chest on main floor I assume
Once more, we’re the ones who check for traps. Saying that we check for traps did nothing to identify the stalkroach.
It doesn’t hurt to ask, but I don’t want anyone thinking that we can make something safe by saying we look for traps.
Just to be sure, I pixel-checked the stalkroach chest before it was opened, and there’s no difference to a normal chest. I also checked all its images since turn 3, in case we could i.e. see some tiny leg tips protruding out of it for a blink of an eye, etc. Nothing.
Kamau: use the torch, waving it around ahead of you wherever you go in this room, so you set any more spider webs – even if you can’t see them – on fire. “Clear” the path to the chest and to the hatch in the roof, then let Ricki check the chest for traps. If she can’t find any, let her step back and then open the chest, be ready to jump back in case of stalkroach (or other nasty contents).
Ricki: wait until Kamau “cleared the path” with his torch, then inspect the chest. Tell Kamau if you found any traps, then step back. If Kamau was able to clear the path to the hatch, too, avoid the glass and go take a peek outside and try to gauge a) how much higher is the tower? b) is it safe to be out ontop of the roof and is it going “around” (so that on it, she could get to the birds nest)? c) how high do the rungs on the outside of the tower go (all the way up there, half way, … ?) and are there any more openings through which one could move back inside (also are those openings big enough for Kamau, or will only Ricki fit)?
Boy am I glad we didn’t switch back to the leather armour, we would have taken even more damage. And “yay”, counterattack triggered (I would have been even happier with Kamau NOT taking any damage this turn, but I’ll take it. at least no more giant spider).
Ricki: Use holy light to attack across the room to the first-level-chest’s lid. (Trying to smoke out any webs in the way).
Kamau: Open the first-level chest. Check out that door to the roof on the second level (there’s glass there for boots to ignore).
Counterattack: 1/7. Unclear if it helped in this instance, I think the double team would’ve taken it out anyway, but glad to see it works as I expected vs a single boss – another 5 damage on top of breaking through armour will wipe out most things. I am glad we didn’t swap to leather, there’s no indication that the damage is armour-piercing so that would’ve been 3 HP lost instead of 1. Let’s not bother with the chest behind that other spider down below.
I wonder if the spider’s attack increased by 1 each turn, that would match the pattern. Otherwise, that’s attack values of <=5, 6, and 7. There was no remark about a special enemy attack this turn either, or about any other debuff effects.
It could be that the poison had some kind of effect that would increase future damage dealt by the spider somehow. But if that was the case, I would really have liked to at least get some “debuff” info in the character page (like we did with the snale acid attack. Then again, we DID use a lens on the snale, so we -knew- the effects of its attack to a “t”, so that might be the reason why we were not getting any info from the spider venom this time).
> its attack to a “t”
Huh? What do yo umean?
“know to a >>t<<” (idiom): know something very well, in all details, extends, fully completely, without leaving any open question, totally,… ; similar: “know something like the back of ones hand”. We had access to the snale’s “Monster Manual Entry”, thus we got the info. We did not use a magical lens on the spider, thus we do not know everything about it, thus we do not get all info about it.
YEAH! Go Kamau!
