Dungeon 17 Turn 9
————

Ricki leads Mac back across some traps on their way to the other end of the dungeon. On the way, Ricki is attacked by one of the flying books, but she tanks the damage.
Mac drops his javelin and his new ring for safekeeping before moving on to the next fight.

Ricki attacks the two red flying books, taking one of them out but also taking hits from both, dealing a total of 6 damage when added to the hit from the previous room. While that’s happening, Mac runs past and reads the blue-covered books above, which attracts the attention of the nearby grimoirm. It attacks Mac, dealing no damage past his defenses, but consuming the enchantment on his gold ring of protection, returning it to an ordinary gold ring. Mac retreats to the lower part of the room.
Mac has gained the Well Read II ability.
Both Ricki and Mac then cough up another point of maximum HP. They’re starting to get low…

Plan peace of mind:
Ricki: attack red book.
Mac: examine the red gate
We only assumed we need well read 3 to pass but if there’s more requirements (like killing books) then we’re in trouble and need to start acting now
At “Turn after:” also Ricki and Mac loose another maxHP to the dust, leaving Mac with 2maxHP.
“use the pick”, “smif hat”. Maybe we want to do that in reverse order, just in case using the pick is noisy and results in enemies rushing to the source of the noise?
Mac has WR2. I think Ricky with WR3 is better suited to inspect a gate with red symbols.
I just had a terrible thought…
We’ve only assumed the condition to open the gate is to have well read 3. What if it actually requires all red books to be gone? (Or all flying ones even?) I really want to examine the gate now just in case…
If Ricki ends the flying red book next to her, there is just one not-flying and one flying red book left. Both are easier to reach if Mac breaches that wall.
Plan: soldier on
Ricki: attack red book
Mac: use dig to get to locked chest. Go through hole to the next room.
We can heal Ricki next turn while Mac gets his red book.
Then Mac can grab his stuff after that. Then we loot and end.
As far as Actions/turns go, Mac’s turns are pretty set in stone:
Dig. Read Red. Pickup drops while moving back. Smiff Hat.
We mostly want to get Mac well read asap as the only things that can screw us up is the books waking up.
Well, “digging” sounds “noisy” to me. If we’re worried about i.e. green book in our current room waking up and attacking us, we should definitely heal Ricky first.
“Ricki attacks the two red flying books, taking one of them out”
Spelled book: “Drops: random Enchantment Scroll”
Where did the scroll go?
drops only happen after all enemies are dead in a group
Damnit. I see my suggestion had more votes, but maybe I posted too late, or maybe it was too verbose, without clear action orders. And we rolled the worst case. Oh well, my bad, sorry guys :/
Red book is now rather harmless, unless its attack adds up to some other monsters’ attacks.
Ricky already has WR3 and I have a gut feeling for that red symbols around the gate, that maybe, just maybe, there is something to actually read there, which requires having red books already done. I kinda doubt we need to dispose of all red books – we just did one here, and symbols from the gate didn’t disappear and actually didn’t react at all to the book being destroyed. So it must be something else.
Until we actually inspect the gate, we only guess. It may be very well unlocked and ready to open all the time since very beginning.EDIT: D17T1: “It’s for sure sealed, though, and she can’t see an obvious way to open it.”For that reason alone:
Mac: go up the ladder to the level here bookworm is (not to the skeletons), and dig through the wall to your right to get to the chests, so Ricky can get there.
Ricky: inspect the gate (is it an action? or is it a free lookaround?), and then follow Mac and if you still have actions left – open locked chest with lockpicks, it doesn’t seem to have any traps on it.
I do not know if there is a possibility of traps undetectable with Ricky’s current skill. Someone post a plan to heal up with grit instead, as she may die!
Also, last time we made noise with chest lid, a book woke up but didn’t fly towards us. I assume the same is going to happen when Mac digs a wall. “Digging” certainly is “noisy”. If we’re worried about green book in our current room waking up and immediately attacking us, we should definitely postpone digging and we should heal Ricky first.
Ricki: grit.
Mac: use dig to get to locked chest. Go through hole to the next room.
