Dungeon 17 Turn 16 Part 2
————

“The Glorious One has died. As a High Being of the holy element, the magic within the texts she consumed has proven no substitute for the energy of the sun. Without it she has diminished over many years, and no new High Beings have appeared to lead us in her stead. Now the tribe has splintered between those who chose to flee, at the Glorious One’s own request, and those who choose to remain at her side. We in this latter group cling to one final, desperate hope.”

“Three of us have volunteered to be sealed within a chamber with the Glorious One, with the very walls of the dungeon grown over us by ancient ritual. In these confined quarters it is hoped that the Glorious One’s remaining power will pool sufficiently to allow a new High Being to be born from an egg. Though it may take years, the rest of the tribe has left us with generous supplies of food and water. We are dedicated to this course. Only the breath of a holy element High One will open the door from this side. We will revive the tribe, or we will perish with it.”

“Wow. It sounds like the dragon had laid infertile eggs, and the kobolds were trying to get one of them to hatch.”
“They were awfully dedicated to their dragon, if they were willing to be sealed in here on such a slim chance.”
“I’d think they would just leave if they were being mistreated the way you described.”

“Maybe this means—”
“You’re sure it says three of them were staying?”
“I’m pretty sure. This word is three, right?”
“Yes…”

“…so why are there five bodies?”

Well, Mac, when a mommy kobold and a daddy kobold love each other very much…
Serious answer: we had three kobolds trying to hatch dragon eggs, and now we have five dead kobolds and (seemingly) no eggs. The two extras either hatched from the eggs, are the children of two of the original kobolds, or are kobolds who somehow either snuck in with them or were somehow able to open the door from the outside and then shut it again.
I think them being the children of the dragon somehow makes a lot more sense than any of the other options. Kobolds being little potential/’failed’ dragons is an interesting idea.
I wonder if Mac is going to get some sort of inherent holy/light powers out of this…? He’s always had that religious aspect to his character, so him becoming more of a light/holy affiliated being based off of his own merits would be interesting.
Are kobolds and dragons actually the same species?
Do dragons come from a kobold-egg which has been infused with Magic?
Or Kobolds from a magic-starved dragon-egg?
We do not see any traces of an egg there, and this group of 5 is together in a corner, not scattered around. Also, the door needs hole-element to be opened from inside, not outside.
Also, the GloriousOne is Holy/Sun. The same as the current Emperor.
My wild guess is that whatever happened, this party-of-five were not the original party-of-three, and that the current Emperor had been deeply involved in this, and both the lack of any traces of an egg is his doing, somehow. Maybe he hatched here? That would be wild 😀
Ancient kobolds count in base 12 and the two extra numbers are at the beginning. So it’s one, flock, two, dring, three Kobolds. Everything is fine. Don’t worry about it.
This also doesn’t explain how 9 kobolds ended up as undead before the chamber.
Fireflies banner today. Damn, the time flies so fast.
