Dungeon 16 Turn 21
————

Ix and Toaster finish off the final pea soldier, causing all of them to fall over in perfect sync, with a clatter of dropped equipment.
Kamau eats a corn spear. He can’t believe he’s doing this again. Why does it keep happening? Why does it taste even better now? He returns to full HP and then follows Ricki up the ladder.

It looks like the peas up here died too.
Ricki follows Botanya to the next room.

Ricki and Botanya examine some of their enemies to get more information. Ricki sees that the nearest corn knight carries no unexpected gear except for a new kind of polearm, while Botanya uses a magic lens to learn that the giant blue head of lettuce with arms and legs is exactly what it definitely obviously looks like.

ICEBERG LETTUCE
HP: 20
Atk: 12 ice damage
Def: 12
Ability: loses no HP from first two instances of damage, takes +4 damage from fire
This giant vegetable has been infused with both elemental magic and with life. It is very large and its outer leaves must be stripped away in order to damage its living core. It tends to favour fighting the largest target it can see, but it changes targets if that doesn’t work. When turned into salad it never wilts.
PIKE
Weapon
Atk +2. When used with a shield, instead has an Atk bonus equal to the shield’s base Def bonus.
Weight 2, Cost 15

Plan: you don’t make friends with lettuce.
No reason to engage that lettuce. No drops, takes min 3 turns to kill, it is not guarding anything and it is not alerted. If it does alert, engage next turn we can handle it. Nothing scary besides a turn waste.
Kamau: move right and Interpose mid/top of first ladder to get corn knights and lettuce if need be.
Ricki: equip poisoners gloves again. move up ladder and attack corn knight 1.
Shroom: attack corn knight 1
Ix: move up. Move right and up ladder. Stab corn knight 1 in melee.
Toaster: attack corn knight 1
Botania: move up ladder and up ladder again to scout.
That should kill one knight. Next turn we take out the other.
Hopefully lettuce doesn’t engage at all and we can ignore
The ‘salad’ description hints that we may get a unique item from it. Probably consumable. Maybe even treasure, since it’s super rare gourmet thingy etc. But it’s not corn-based enemy, so I guess lowest priority and only if we have spare turns.
why not have princess bite other corn?
Ultimately because I think we would still need both ix and ricki to take it out even if it was short 2 hp
Corn Knight, Harvest
HP: 13
Def: 7
Tower Shield: Def +4
Helmet, full: Def +2
Plate armour: Def. +5
Sum: 31 (at least)
Yes, definitely both needed!
The lettuce taking 3 turns isn’t actually an issue, unless you think we can kill both corns in 1 turn, which you don’t.
T1: Princess bites it while we kill Corn 1, protected by K interposing
T2: Princess bites it while we kill Corn 2, protected by K interposing
T3: We kill the Lettuce and get its drop, which obv is going to be worth the 1T it actually takes
First round is 32 dmg vs Kamau’s 18 def (60% dodge).
Round 2 is 22 dmg vs Kamau’s 18 def (60% dodge).
Thats a lot of potential dmg on kamau for the sake of…a drop thats not listed on the monster’s entry.
Concerns:
I would bet that “When turned into salad it never wilts” is a DM joke and there is no drop. I think this lettuce is grade-A schmuck bait.
> Can Kamau actually interpose in two fights at the same time?
Most likely he can’t, and this woudl form a problem, unless the Lettuce goes up to the knights (unlikely) or unless we manage to drag the knights down (which may be possible, somehow, but I doubt).
He can and has, as long as they’re in the same area.
But Claudious is right, for other reasons: I keep forgetting pets can’t attack unless their owner does, so we can’t send her to burn the lettuce’s invulnerability turns while the rest of the group engages the knights.
Are you sure we can engage the corns without provoking big boi lettuce into the fight?
No. But given it didn’t alert or is close to the ladders, I think we’ll have at least one turn if it does agro, which will mean only one corn knight and lettuce which Kamau can tank for minimal hp loss (if dodge fails)
Just a note: Those are not “CORN KNIGHT”s but “CORN KNIGHT, HARVEST“s, as seen by their brown color (instead of green) at the https://dungeoneyes.com/enemies/ page.
I guess it’s safe to assume that all Corn-based enemies in this dungeon are “, Harvest”
