Dungeon 11 Turn 11
————
Everyone else leaves Kamau to finish the fight in the basement by himself, which he does with a single epic cleave (seriously, it looked so cool). Due to Amadeusz no longer being in the room to cow them, however, the dogs strike harder than before and he takes a whopping 6 damage, leaving him with a single HP.
The guard drops an imperial maul and chain armour. They both weigh the same, so Kamau picks up the chain armour since at least he could theoretically use it.
Ricki and Mac loot the two chests the golem was guarding. It seems they contain a variety of gear items that haven’t yet received the imperial branding. Ricki holds on to a battleaxe but drops a longsword and warhammer, while Macadamia stows leather and chain armour in Golly’s packs.
Amadeusz reads the note on the upper floor.
“The bunks are to remain locked until I have a chance to see what sort of contraband certain of you have been hiding.”

Yikes. That was a big mistake and we should have caught that. Sorry!
Since the Patrol has not shown up it means either they are clearing the room of bugs (yay), or that the rats respawned on turn 10 and they are still fighting that. Regardless, we dont want to wander into them by accident, so we should push forward and heal a bit first.
Plan: Heal and move on.
Mac: Move down. Use wand of Mend on Kamau and drop cake. Move up again. (keeps an eye on this room.
Ricki: Move down and lockpick door. Point out traps (ladder rung, 2 pressure plates above dogs, 3 pressure plates on bottom floor) to Amad
Amad: Move down. Avoid traps and read note by Imp door.
Kamau: Avoid Traps and read note above doggies.
Do we want to be using lockpicks at this juncture? Are they not needed for chests? Do we want to leave items (our primary goal) overlong on the floor?
I suggest we smiff those silver rings into defense rings and give them to Kamau. And also heal him.
Let Ricki and Amadeusz be the bruisers.
It would be good to use up that worthless imperial armor Kamau is carrying and make room for more valuable loot. Right now we’re at 83 GP by my calculations (chain armor, leather armor, 2 shields & a battleaxe), so if we could grab the warhammer and longsword we’d be almost at the 100 we need.
[Claudious’ commented on this. I should do a Shift+Reload to not get some page version from some cache server before commenting. Sorry.]
– The fourth ladder rung is not a rung but something different, maybe a trap.
– The chest below Kamau’s floor is trapped.
– On the same floor to the right there are two traps on the floor.
– There are 3 pressure plates on the lowest floor.
Wow, good eye on the ladder trap! Probably a rung that will spin when stepped on and dump the climber onto the pressure plate at the bottom.
Given the room layout, that rung likely either breaks or hurts you, and forces you to fall down in the other trap below.
Plan: Hurry up and Wait.
Kamau: move up, drop imperial chain armor and imperial leather armor near maca and grab cake (if possible) the regular weapons
Mac: Heal Kamau with wand of mend. Drop imperial longswords, we aren’t going to use them. Drop cake for Kamau to use.
Ricki: Drop Imperial Leather Armour near mac. Try getting regular weapons from floor.
Amadeusz: Stow siegesword, take up thrum & zing, briefly go left, and then rejoin the rest of the crew. (I am assured he can take all the guards’ damage – DO CORRECT ME IF I AM WRONG)
Guys, we’re not gonna use any imperial equipment other than chain, plate and maul. Let’s just set our inventory properly. Mac can smif the chain next turn.
It is possible we may want to throw a sword at the chandelier keys or feed something to rusty to distract it later. That said, we can get that stuff again when we take out patrol
I believe you’re right. Three guards with longswords should do 6 points of damage and Ama’s def is 8.
Imperial Longsword has Atk +2 according to the item list. Do the guards have a base attack of 0?
No, guards have 1 atk, so patrol deals 9 total
So after stowing the siegesword, Amadeusz has 9 Def., the guards have 9 Atk – if they do not have rings or something nasty, this should be OK, barely.
Typically same turn pick up and drop it’s treated as trading, so Mac can’t do both that and use the wand
Yeah, that’s why I said “if possible” I don’t rightly recall the ruling on that

A plan to rearrange inventories while bracing for patrol encounter. Gives Mac extra armor, puts heavy stuff on Molly, trades golem core to Mac because it’s probably a bomb ingredient and he is probably the one who’s going to be crafting it
Mac, Kamau, Ricki: trade stuff in the dead golem room
Mac:
drop Imp longsword x2
take mend and lather from Molly
trade Cake for imp chain with Kamau, pass it to Molly
give Warhammer from the floor to Molly
trade Mend for Golem core with Ricki
take longsword from the floor
Kamau: trade imp chain for cake with Mac
Ricki: swap Golem core for Mend
Ama: unequip sword to have 9 def, go take a look at the rat room, then rejoin the team and play a nice melody on Zing & Thrum because you can
Next turns:
13: Kamau interposes, Mac smiffs, Ama and pets kill a guard, Ricki mends (can’t kill more than one guard even with Ricki)
14: Kamau, Ama and Mac finish guards (Mac is safe thanks to def ring and leather) armor. Ricki mends
Ricki and Mac swap mend for new ring later
Wow. This may be the first dungeon we have to abandon without hitting the goals. Every cluster of enemies that has an elite guard in it has done at least one damage to Kamau even when we are extremely careful and stack all our attacks. The Wand of Mending can restore him to four HP if we just use it every single turn until it can’t be used, and then the cake grants him either 2 or 3HP…I think 3. So we would have to take three turns to get him up to seven, and then for every cluster of enemies with an elite guard, we NEED all hands on deck so he suffers a negligible loss in HP.
I can see us maybe, maybe hitting the primary goal if we take the time to get Kamau back to 6-7 HP and then being very strategic and focusing only on the goal areas. I think the secondary goal is out of the question now. I haven’t forgotten Kamau has Dauntless but to have him at 1HP this early, with many similar clusters remaining that can scrape away that HP? No. Let’s take our time and ONLY target places that will help us get that first goal. We have 40 turns and I think we can safely abandon full dungeon clearing or bombing the place.
I don’t think it’s quite that bad, but we do need figure out which parts of this dungeon we still want do and go for that only.
Personally I’d vote for the ringsmiff cells:
– getting a gold ring ensures we can buy those in the future (+ Mac can carry 4 silver rings in one slot which saves us at least 30g we’d spend on the next 3)
– that thing in the lowest cell looks like some sort of mining/metalworking suit, could be useful &/ expensive
Kamau is wearing two silver rings of aggression, while Amadeusz wears two copper rings of defense. Maybe they should exchange the rings and Kamau should interpose while Amadeusz makes use of the siegesword?
I think getting extra Def on Kamau will be doog in the long run, Discord is also considering to make a =2Def fring (from imp chainmail) and a silver dodge ring, which we could also give to Kamau instead.
Additionally having +2 Def from rings on him will allow us to get him down to 7Def by swicthing to leather armor, which mean he can interpose the golems without triggering the unblockable aoe damage
I’m pretty certain that’s not how the golem’s damage works. He does area damage, and that area damage does 1 unblockable if it would otherwise be resisted on any given target. So Ricki or whomever would still always take at least 1 dmg if they were in melee range.
I could be wrong (see my stupid math comment above), but haven’t we only fought one elite guard so far – namely the one directly above where Ricki and Mac are looting right now? I was assuming it was the black boots that marked him as an elite, but on reflection maybe that was just his plate mail. If so, how do we identify the elites?
This is a very late reply but I’m going back through the Comments in the Guard Outpost as we prepare to do the Research Facility. To answer your question about how to visually identify an elite Guard, look at their helmet – the Elite has a point at the center top of the visor as well as a chin strap that the regular Guards don’t have.
