Dungeon 7 Turn 39
————
Kamau ties the rope into a lasso and loops it around one of the tree’s branches. He tests it and finds it sturdy, so he climbs up to the treehouse and accidentally on purpose walks into the spider web that he doesn’t know is there. The spider immediately lunges at him, but deals no damage.
Macadamia climbs up and frees Kamau with a few deft slashes of his swiftblade.
Ricki joins Lohk underground. With an arrow from the hunting bow and a ray of frost, the tomato vine is destroyed. Six tomatoes drop to the potatobeast below, who fastidiously catches them all and places them in a neat pile. It seems they can’t be freely looted just yet…
Edit: Nevermind, forgot we get another debuff on 40.
Doesn’t work. We get a debuff next turn.
Ah, you’re right, I forgot about that. Thanks
Ricki: trade axe with molly for corn and onion, double move up and left, attack spider with axe.
Lohk: Mom senses to Ricki once she is at the treehouse, attack spider with frost bolt.
Kamau: interpose
Maca: attack spider.
I don’t want anybody to near the stalk by turn’s end and we got two free chests at the treehouse to focus on while we wait for it to sprout.
Credit to Sickass for the mom senses usage. I think it will be very much necessary to get lohk off the stalk in a timely manner since she is slow.
Doesn’t Ricki only have 4 Atk with max roll axe after debuff? I don’t see how this can kill.
Not the objective. Objective is mostly to get everyone in position for dealing with treehouse, away from stalk, and start doing damage. Could kill, but not guaranteed.
EDIT: Ignore this, forgot about poison.
Ricki: double move up and left, attack spider with bow.
Lohk: Mom senses to Ricki once she is at the treehouse, attack spider with frost bolt.
Kamau: interpose
Maca: attack spider.
Explanation: Shamelessly copy/pasted Siv’s plan with a minor edit. This is a guarantee one turn kill on the Spider instead of 2/3 chance but costs an Arrow.
I don’t think Mom sense can be controlled like that. It lets her move to Ricki but we don’t know if that means where Ricki starts the turn or ends it.
Edit – I was wrong about this. See my comment below.
Given we don’t know, and that we have to get Lohk off the stalk, seems the time to try that
LSN actually did clarify this on discord. Mom sense sends Lohk to where Ricki ends her turn.
Kamau: Open and loot the chest behind the spider. Wait for Macadamia to push the chest, then lift him up to the squirrel level then follow him.
Macadamia: Push the now empty chest to the edge of the tree house so Kamau can stand on it and get up to the squirrel level. Get boosted by Kamau.
Lohk: Go up one screen. Trade your wand of fire with Ricki for her torch. Stay away from the stalk at the end of the turn just in case.
Ricki: Go up one. Trade with Lohk then head right to the carrot pile.
Explanation: We don’t need to fight the spider, we can just loot its chest. Trading the torch onto Lohk will let us fight the potato beast when we get a second, which is our best veggie source. Ricki can’t hold the torch and use her bow so we need to switch the torch onto someone that only needs one hand to fight.
Is poison damage blocked by armor? If not, there’s a 50/50 chance this will remorse Kamau out of the dungeon
It is. Elemental damage is absorbed by regular defense, it’s just that sometimes we can also have defense against particular elements in addition to any regular defense. The spider shouldn’t attack Mac because it attacked Kamau last turn and Kamau is leading the way in to grab the chest contents. If it does attack Mac, the most damage Mac could take is 6 (4+2 poison). Only one squirrel is facing right so he’d take 7 at the most which is his armor total. I think even that’s unlikely though because the spider has no real reason to fight Mac over Kamau. The how to play talks about this a bit, but the gist of it is that elemental damage is automatically unblockable without some weakness to it or something of the like. Holy damage was unblockable on the faithless but that doesn’t mean it’s unblockable for us.
The How to Play specifies that some damage types are unblockable… But now that I think about it, the fact that Kamau didn’t take damage this turn means that poison isn’t one of them.
My interpretation of that is that’s it’s referring to things like the death touch wand and the knight specter attack from last dungeon, not that something like poison or fire or cold damage are inherently unblockable (which is also borne out by our experience with people being able to tank centipede, spider, and plague rat damage with nothing but sufficient regular armor).
If the spider is not attacked it will likely attack at random. If it crit hits on Mac, Kamau WILL remorse out. If the third squirrel also gets alerted and joins the fight, which strikes me as HIGHLY LIKELY, Mac dies too.
You’re also assuming the spider will allow us to push the chest past it
That’s fair. That might not work.
I don’t think that’s reasonable. It started targeting Kamau, Kamau is leading the turn off by walking by the spider. Seems weird for it to switch targets when it started targeting Kamau last turn and it’s not an intelligent creature.
So… You intend to bet Mac’s life on that? Remember, the spider isn’t being attacked, so we are not guaranteeing its targeting. It may well be unintelligent, but random.
I just don’t think it’s risking Mac’s life. I don’t remember an unintelligent enemy changing targets once it’s picked a target as long as
1) that target is still available
2) It’s not being targeted by another character and/or ignored by the first.
Since Kamau is walking by the spider first, is already the spider’s target, and nothing else is attacking the spider, I’d be super surprised if it attacked anyone other than Kamau.
For this to be risking Mac’s life, not only does
1) The spider needs to ignore Kamau and let him pass by it, even though it attacked him last turn, so that it can attack Mac instead.
2) The squirrels need to both attack Mac just for getting on the platform.
3) Either the spider needs to have rolled a poison crit OR all three squirrels need to attack Mac just for getting on the platform if no crit was rolled before. I think that’s unrealistic because two of the squirrels are facing away. Obviously if one squirrel is engaged in melee the others have a good chance of turning around, but that’s not happening this turn.
Ultimately I’m pretty sure I have a good plan for next turn if we go with CTNC’s plan instead of mine, so it’s not super important which one we go with. I just think it’s not a super likely series of events, based on the enemy behavior we’ve seen, that leads to Mac getting attacked by anything other than squirrels this turn.
The only real value of my plan is that it gets eyes on the chest contents now, preserves Momsenses for a potential better use later, and it gets the torch to Lohk in case we needed to loot the potatobeast chest (or fight the potatobast) in a hurry. We should be able to get eyes on the chest content and do the torch trade next turn (or the turn after) without any great difficulty, so if people really find it at all likely that this plan kills Mac or generates remorse, they should go with the other plan. The only real cost is the loss of Mom sense in that case.
I will say one big benefit is that we might see a spider gland drop, which would presumably unlock them in the shop. That’s not nothing, given how powerful poison use looks to be once unlocked.
Thoughts about when to leave?
Once stalk reveals its surprise.
Spider is only HP: 9 .. kill it mac!
Spider: HP: 9, Def: 3
Macadamia: Atk: 9, minus 4 (turn 40!) from pacifying pollen, sum: 5
turn 40: atk 5 – def 3 = 2, 9-2= 7
turn 41: atk 5 – def 3 = 2, 7-2= 5
turn 42: atk 5 – def 3 = 2, 5-2= 3
turn 43: atk 5 – def 3 = 2, 3-2= 1
turn 44: atk 5 – def 3 = 2, 1-2=-1, but never lower than 0, spider dead.
That is a waste of 5 turns of Mac when he can do other things.
