Dungeon 4 Turn 10
————
As the next layer of pipes flood with water, Kamau attacks the beavers in melee. Kamau takes 2 damage from them due to the -1 penalty to Def he takes for fighting in the water, and the -1 penalty to Atk prevents him from killing his target. The beavers on the other hand seem completely at home in the water. Fortunately, Lara is ready to assist with a ranged spell, and one of the two beavers is slain. Since he is tied up in melee combat, Kamau takes 1 more unblockable damage from holding his breath. Lara is able to surface for air, however, and takes no damage.
Ricki easily slays the newly-freed rat, but it and the pile both attack her first and deal 1 damage. Kamau is nearing the limits of his tolerance for allies being hurt…
Kamau hold the shield, open the chest.
Lara: shoot small rat
Ricki: leave the room, get thieves tools, head back in
Which of the three? Did you want to specify?
I think we should shoot one of the Rak King’s other allies first. If we have an odd number of turns, we can take out the small rat last because it takes one hit and every other minion would take two. If we have an even number of turns, we can take out the Beaver and Dire Rat. (I wouldn’t try the Plague Rat in case it’s immune to Poison Damage.) We’ll probably take out the small rat before opening the gate, but this is just for the what if.
Ricki: move through the rat tunnel into the middle room. Pick up the thieves tools. Go back through the rat tunnel to where you just were.
Kamau: grab (and equip) leather armour from Lara, go up to breathe, loot leftmost chest, go back up to breathe again.
Lara: use sting spell on the remaining beaver to keep it busy (and threrefore from stopping Kamau to loot the chest) while maintaining her head in the air pocket.
Both Lara and Kamau: end the turn up in the air pocket.
So atm Kamau doesn’t have any defensive gear on him (I’m writing this down, in case anyone wants to draw conclusions from this battle in the future, as the equipment doesn’t get recorded turn by turn.). That means he had 3 innate Def in this fight, one of which was “gone” temporarily, because of underwater fight debuff. That, in turn means beavers have 2 attack. And that also means that one beaver alone isn’t enough to hurt either Lara nor Kamau, even if underwater.
EDIT: I clarified that Lara is supposed not to put her head underwater as she ranged-attacks the remaining beaver.
Won’t Ricki face the rat pile twice (10 atk) if she does that?
Yes, she will walk past the rat pile twice, but I think the rat pile still has only one attack per turn. However, we in fact do not know that for 100% sure, correct?
So maybe we should give Ricky a 1 turn delay on that 😐EDIT: Nah, just stop after coming back through the hole and dont walk past the rats second time. I think she even isn’t able to do so, but just in case the rat-pile gets some kind of extra opportunity attack – don’t walk past it for the second time. Just re-enter the room.
No. From How to Play: “Sometimes an enemy is guarding an item, a chest, or a passage. If a character tries to steal a guarded item, loot a guarded chest, or simply run past an enemy without fighting them, the enemy can still attack that character. However, the enemy can still only make one attack per turn.”
Enemies only get one attack per turn.
Also, I warn everyone LSN may consider Kamau tied up in melee combat. That’s a possibly acceptable risk, but it is a risk.
Right. Feels like we probably want to kill the beaver so that we can loot without worrying about being “tied up in melee combat” otherwise we’re looking at 3 damage on Kamau.
Ricki has 1 (one) free inventory space. She will put the thieves tools there. Then there are 0 (zero) slots left. I would like her to keep the tools after using, to take the loot from the chest, and to bring back the long-sword. That would be doable, if Ricki picks up the thieves tools and there puts down the rat fang and the rat tails. If I understand the plan right, she is not going to fight the rat pile but let it fail against her 5 Def. If she is supposed to fight, she could use the then-picked-up long-sword. So, what about “Pick up the thieves tools, lay down rat fang and rat tails there”?
No. Ricky should not fight the rat pile now. It’s pointless for now, and what we need is the chest content, as it may be treasure, or simply helpful. Also, attacking the rat pile risks detaching another rat, and that would mean we must escape from this room and can’t get back inside. Right now, she should focus on looting whatever she can, so putting away the weapons is fine.
Ricky may attempt to kill the rat pile after we loot everything we can in this room, and we have nothing more to do here. I wrote a plan like that in another post in this turn.
I am completely with you. It was only: Even if theoretically it would be wanted or necessary to have a weapon, then there is one, thus: drop that rat fang and tails outside.
Without the leather armor, Lara has 1 defense naturally, +2 for shield, -1 if in water, sum: 2 defense. Are we sure that beavers only have 2 attacks? Otherwise; Can Lara lay on the floor on the dry level and hit the beaver from there? LOS is given, if the beaver doesn’t retreat.
Since we want Ricki to both retrieve the longsword and open the chest, it’s a waste to dash. If you wanted this, then at least leave something behind so she doesn’t need to go back and forth again if there are multiple treasures in the chest and/or she doesn’t throw away tools.
Alternate version (after getting so much feedback):
Ricki: grab longsword (if unguarded, don’t want to spend an action here) go back through the rat tunnel. Pick up thieves tools. Move left to the area where Lara and Kamau are, remain “on land”. Pass rat fang dagger and rat tails to Kamau. Get another set of thieves tools from Lara (just in case she uses up one).
Lara: make trades with Ricki as above, spell-sting beaver from “on land”.
Kamau: make trades with Ricki as above, attack beaver rat from “on land”, if it comes close enough.
That way turn 12, we can have Ricki loot the locked chest and pass on any resulting loot to our other chars with more inventory space. She will also have “enough” thieves tools to unlock the chest next to the rat pile in turn 14 (she needs a full turn to go back there from here).
If the beaver dies turn 11, both Lara and Kamau can loot a chest in turn 12.
Ricki: Go out the hole, trade the lockpicks for the rat tails and the rat fang, then go back in
Kamau: Swim over and open the middle chest, then surface for air if you can
Lara: Stick your head above water, and then if you can, Sting the beaver.
This is what I would have posted. Ricki needs to ignore the rat pile forever now, so let’s just unlock the chest and bail. She’s putting down two items, because she will need to pick up the longsword, the loot, and she may keep the lockpicks.
Kamau is the only one who can take damage now. Beaver won’t deal damage to him with 3(-1) def, so we can ignore it. Now we need to know if he can open chests and surface for air in the same turn. I highly doubt it, but if it works, we can have Lara help out next turn (carrying her own 3 def).
Lara doesn’t have much to do, so she can sting the beaver, in case Kamau can only surface for air if the beaver isn’t blocking him.
Since Kamau disengages from the beaver, won’t Lara be attacked by the beaver when she shoots it? See how Ricky tried to be smart and she got a flying head on her head.
EDIT: I’ve just checked character sheet, and Lara has 4 def, Kamau has 3 def, and you don’t suggest exchanging items, so it’s all on the safe side. Except maybe for what SIV suggested about Ricky going back and passing the rat-pile twice, but I think the enemy has just 1 attack per turn, and after coming back, Ricky doesn’t need to run past it, just stop at the entrance, and it’s safe as well. Yay.
I’m worried that if the beaver engages Lara she’ll be stuck underwater in melee and take 1 unblockable. Maybe clarify to try and fight it at the edge of the water?
This is a very good point. I wasn’t worried about damage, but that may count as being tied in melee.
Maybe just not AT THE EDGE. Maybe we just tell Lara to go up into the dry level, and tell Kamau to aggro the beaver and go to the ladder and take a breathe, beaver will probably follow him, so Lara can shoot it down the ladder without any linguistic tricks.
If Kamau aggros the beaver rat, he might get stuck in the water again, and suffer one more unblockable damage from lack of air.
Ricki: Get longsword, leave room, trade it and the rat fang for the thieves tools. Do not return to hole yet ,to avoid risk of being mobbed by rat pile. Leave that for next turn, we have time.
Kamau, leave the water and go to the next room on the right, meanwhile take and equip the shield from Lara, and take the equipment ricki dropped (best not to leave it lying about) – this is in preparation to killing rats above which we’ll try as soon as possible.
Lara, start venomous stinging the beaver. It will take a while (three turns), but we have time. Unless it runs into your melee range, in which case kill it with longsword.
This strategy is to avoid extra damage on all characters (including possible stacking drowning damage) in an attempt to prevent premature dauntless activation on Kamau (we will need to activate dauntless to escape the dungeon).
As always, corrections are welcome, and this comment will be edited as needed.
Current unknowns:
Can we snipe through the grate.
Can the Rat King group snipe Us through the grate
Does being in combat underwater stop us from moving (being tied up as it were)
Can we loot and move back to fresh air?
We are on the very edge of another remorse for Kamau, and he only has 4 hp + dautless left. If we do take drowning damage for looting we’ll really be at our limit. If the Rat king can do any damage to Lara in retaliation we’ll be in trouble for sure.
Rat king plan is now gone, aside from maybe having ricki talk to him. We’re not attacking them at all at this point. Loot and get out.
I really wonder how rude the Rat King’s answer will be 😀
EDIT: oh.. I know. He’ll say SQUEAK! xD
If we’re careful, we should be able to easily loot all three unlocked chests, and the locked chest in the lever room and the locked chest outside.
Idea for unspecified future turns:Once it’s done, how about we then have Ricky armour up to 5 def like now, and go in with RatFang and one or two rat tails, and attempt to finish off the rat pile? Enter the room. Wait till next turn. Then attack the pile using RatFang+RatTail. If the rat pile dies, yay, loot and get out. If the rat pile survives and no new rats get detached, attack it second time the same way, again with spending a RatTail. This should be enough. But if after first attack the rat pile survives AND a new rat is detached, then immediately GTFO on the next turn, while the new rat is still a bit dizzy. This way, sounds safe, and maybe we see what’s the loot from this monster, at the cost of 1 or 2 rat tails. Of course, all as long as there’s no water and no drowning.EDIT: Nah. If any at all, we can try finishing off the one at the entrace, at the very end of the quest. The one here is probably not worth the hassle.
If we want to see how Ratpile works we could always try it on the one by the entrance/exit. We need to move over there anyway and we’ll know exactly what our limited resources are.
Sorry, your comment was not displayed for me yet when I wrote mine. As it is the same idea, I think I don’t have to delete my additional post.
True! I already forgot about that one once, and now again I forgot about it. Actually, I was after any loot it may drop (so we could get extra loot from this monster here) but after thinking, it probably drops a few rat tails, so we can just do the one at the entrance like you said. Thanks!
Also, no escape, because we can’t get past right-side room without Kamau!
The following advertisement is intended for Ricki only.
It’s free! Chests! We’re giving you loot! It’s free. We’re giving you a chest. It’s stuff. Free. Its a free chest for you, Ricki. This is free stuff! You gotta bring lockpicks, but the loot is free! If one of those chests has a snorkel or something I swear to god
We should have gone for the stuff 3 turns ago
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cd4-UnU8lWY if you don’t get it
We have 4 turns before the 3rd level floods. We need to loot 5 chests in that time – to that end, Ricki must pick up the longsword, exit the rat hole and exchange the rat tails, longsword, and rat fang for the left behind thieves tools.
Kamau should grab a breath of air, then engage the beaver with Lara in the same fashion as this turn. Lara fires off her Venomous Sting and Kamau attacks with his hilt. The reasoning for this is that looting a chest while being attacked by a beaver probably prevents breathing and will cause drowning damage. Killing the beaver should make looting the remaining chests safer because there’d be nothing preventing us from surfacing for air. There’s also a chance drowning damage isn’t a constant 1 per turn, so we need to enable safe looting in the event that’s the case. If Lara gets attacked by the beaver she won’t take any damage due to her 4 defense, and Kamau should also not take any damage if he’s able to surface for air.
Edited: On second thought I kinda agree with this.
Current plan is
Turn 12 – Ricki renters the hole, loots the chest. Kamau loots a now unguarded chest, and we confirm that he doesn’t take damage from drowning (if he does, we’ll adjust). If the Beaver isn’t dead, next actions will depend on whether Kamau took drowning damage on turn 11.
Turn 13 – Ricki double moves to the locked chest above the old beaver dam. Assuming the beaver died as planned, and that Kamau didn’t take drowning damage looting the unguarded chest on turn 12, Lara and Kamau loot the remaining chests and then regroup with Ricki at the locked chest.
Turn 14 will be looting the locked chest with Ricki (using a tool from the group if necessary), and Lara killing rats with Kamau on the top floor. Then we’ll have 5 whole turns to carefully exit.
Only hard loot requirement is the locked chest in the sealed room. We could loot some of these three unlocked chests in the last 5 turns, swimming down and back up to top. That gets close to deadline though.
… if that does not give any drowning damage. I think it is reasonable that diving, looting unattended, unlocked chest, surfacing does not give any damage, but we plan to determine that in round 12 hopefully. Because the lever 3 room would be 2 rooms away from air and the loot there not unguarded, it is indeed first priority for Ricki.
It’s also a longer swim, requiring us to go through two floors of water and a full room length. I know movement is generally a free action but water movement is still relatively untested.
Ricki: Grab the longsword, go out the hole, trade the lockpicks for the rat tails and longsword
Kamau: Swim over and open the middle chest, then surface for air if you can
Lara: Keep your head above water, and then if you can, Sting the beaver.
As CombatDoctor, but have Ricki snag the longsword this turn instead of moving twice. It means her next two turns are:
Back in and loot chest, leave and [free action], instead of:
Loot chest and don’t move, grab longsword and leave.
Also keeps the rat fang dagger instead of the longsword, in the weird circumstance that we can’t retrieve our weapon.
If Ricki does not leave the rat fang together with rat tails and longsword in the middle room, there will be only one empty item space in her inventory. Are we sure that the chest’s contents will fit into one item space?
Strictly no. But I’d bet against it, there’s a 50% chance the lockpicks break, we can drop them anyway if we must, and we can drop the rat fang outside the hole next turn before going back in anyway if we want. So I’m not making yet another minor variant on the plan.
Ricki: Grab longsword, leave through tunnel.
Lara: Cast Venomous Sting on beaver from above water.
Kamau: Surface. Attack beaver from above water.
Beavers confirmed at 3 HP, 1 Def, 2 Attack. Kamau is no longer at risk of injury from combat but will continue to suffocate if he ever misses.
I don’t think Kamau has to leave the water. As long as he can breath, all the remaining parts of him can stay in the water (i.e. the attack would not be from above the water, except his brain is attacking via his arm, then the brain is above water). Well, just kill the beaver and don’t drown!
I’d say this is time to DIP
Ricki: run the fuck away
Kamau: attack beaver
Lara: Go up to not drown, if able to, shoot a beaver from afar
