Intermission 8 Page 39

“The goblin relocation was formally over as of the mission I told you about, and the travel restrictions had all been lifted by this point.”
“But the truth is, after Goblintown had filled up with refugees from a dozen other campaigns of conquest, letting the goblins leave the city was just the next step in the same process.”
“Once they left, they could be rounded up without the general public finding out.”
“The two that had been captured were clearly scared and confused.”
“They’d probably just wanted to live somewhere less crowded.”
“But now that some Enforcers had them in custody, it was my job to interrogate them.”
“Then kill them.”
“Then dispose of the bodies.”
“I couldn’t do it.”
“But unfortunately, somebody’s always trying to make a name for themself.”
I guess that might be similar to what happened with Ricki. Only Kamau didn’t have any (noticable for me) intention to kill her until she told him about the dungeon eyes, so I guess there’s still more to why Kamau even was triggered to (think about) kill(ing) her in the first place (and I’m hoping we will still learn about that bit, too, even if unfortunately I am doubtful this will be in this intermission).
I hope we get more information on this period of time, because Kamau’s perspective on it isn’t really making a whole lot of sense to me. I can imagine that the Emperor has a good reason for forcing all of the races to live in his domain, since that seems like the sort of thing a God-Emperor would benefit from.
But this plan to let the goblins leave the city, capture them again, interrogate them, and ultimately just kill them anyways makes 0 sense to me. Especially if you’re devoting the efforts of one of your five direct subordinates to, what, interrogating and killing two random goblins? What’s the end-goal there? I imagine it has something to do with Ricki’s Dungeon Eyes and why Kamau nearly merc’d her in the Pub (Dungeon) Crawl, but it all seems incredibly inefficient for an evil empire led by a demiurge. Even if this is all part of a big loyalty test for Kamau, that still doesn’t explain how bizarre this policy is. Kamau’s implying that capturing and killing the goblins like this when they try to leave is a pretty routine thing after all.
It’s pretty obvious that the Emperor isn’t omniscient, but surely there are WAY more efficient ways for him to either genocide the goblins or find out which one has the Dungeon Eyes that he seems to fear.
