Lara kinda deserved it… even if she was sad about her girlfriend, she did help manipulate a bunch of young drow into being arachnomancers, then consign them to painful, terrifying death.

Well, this explains the corruption theme with her.
The Goddess of Spiders always ate people. The only difference was that this mode of worship was not dependent on Her name, so She was less hurt when Her name was Forbidden.
Eating more made Her hungrier, though. As with all vices.
This is suggesting that Corruption isn’t an intrinsic Arachnomancer risk. D5T10 calls this the Arachnomancer curse. Maybe this is just for people who try to leave, or even a personalized curse just for Lara like how other gods granted boons.
It’s a powerful act of rebellion to strike at someone much more powerful than you that wrongs you. They could get away with it because it costs you much more than it costs them, but doing it anyway shows the resolve to put honor/fairness/dignity above comfort/safety. Maybe if enough people took that trade, together they could do real damage.
Just don’t be surprised when they strike back.

No smoking in the non-smoker temple!

The Goddess herself is corrupted, became so when the Emperor banned her name and she started feed on sacrifices.
Consider that the fire Lara caused may have killed many of the arachnomancers at the Temple (we don’t know that). Were their deaths a sacrifice?
Is Lara’s corruption a punishment or a boon from a corrupted goddess?

You’re right. Went back and reread I8P15 and 16.
