Intermission 4 Page 6
————
Ricki sells off the brandy (to Kamau’s disappointment) and the golden helmet (to Lara’s relief), as well as the iron boots and the damaged greatsword and wand. In exchange she buys a suit of heavy plate armour, as well as a replacement torch and two copper rings.
“So what exactly are these rings supposed to be good for?”
“You’ll see once you get to the warrens. It’ll be pretty clear.”
“And what are we trying to do once we get to these warrens?”
“There’s some regular people still living there, so I figure we can ask them if they need help with anything.”
“Sure, if they don’t try to eat our faces. They’ve been living in a dungeon for HOW long?”
“Most kobolds aren’t like that, though! I don’t know why but they seem to do just fine in there.”
“Plus I don’t think the guards even know about this one, so we shouldn’t have to worry about them showing up again.”
“No threat of drowning AND no guards showing up to hassle us? Maybe we should move in, too.”
We should have Kamau pass the boots to Lara. Then the plate armour will provide +5 Def +1 from the heavy armour proficiency. (…plus 2 from the shield and +3 innate sum up to a freaking 11 Def, Kamau’s a real
boytank now!)Also: awwwww, I was kinda hoping that Lara would get the second ring. You know, so the “acting like an old married couple” between her and Kamau would become a tiny little bit more real. XD
I think it may be possible to get 5 Def from plate armor even if Kamau wears boots, the same way you can wear gauntlets and greaves at the same time. Unfortunately, descriptions of different accessories don’t specify where exactly they are worn.
PS. LSN, please add this information to “Items” page so that we don’t have to guess.
I’m fairly sure boots are worn on the feet (sorry, I really don’t mean to sound saracastic here, even if it seems to be stating something fairly obvious), because atm Kamau has 5 green shields (meaning he gets +5 Def from the plate) and I’m gathering that is already including the +1 from the heavy armour proficiency.
Hrm. But that’s kind of weird, because skill Def bonus should be purple (like with Ricki), and not in the same colour as the armour. Maybe LSN forgot about that? And/or Kamau isn’t currently wearing the boots?
Considering the quote a bit more: I feel like the part “if no accessories are worn on the hands and feet” means that BOTH hands and feet need to be accessory-free for the +5 bonus to kick in, not that it only reduces to +4 if both slots are filled, but perhaps LSN could clarify that as well, just to be sure. Pretty please?
There is a new 1 purple shield, see CHARACTERS page.
Yes, NOW there is. When I made that post, there wasn’t.
Yes. There wasn’t.
Interesting, 5 slots is hefty but getting up to +5 defense is impressive. Chain armour is a meaningful sidegrade, getting more inventory space.
Note that Lara can always suit up and go into battle with 8 Defense with plate plus shield, which should avoid risking Remorse. We can barely fit Ricki in the tin can, but she can’t do much else; still, 6 Def instead of 5, which could matter for pulling levers in small areas.
The best part about it is that we can keep pushing it further! Get a better shield, take shield proficiency, give Kamau cheap ale, put a bucket on his head and so on, up to the point where he can tank half of the dungeon at once.
If we talk seriously though, 11 Def should give us a huge advantage in Warrens. This dungeon was introduced together with Chapel. So (unless LSN retroactively made it harder) it should have the same difficulty. This means that we shouldn’t rush the main goal and can concentrate on looting as many rooms as possible. 11 Def might even allow us to ignore the time limit if it is soft (like in the Chapel). The point is, I think it is finally time to slow down.
Ricki: Slow down? But, I can dash now! Can I dash, please? Please, let me dash! I will be super careful, promised!
Do Rings count as accesories on hands?
even if we aren’t planning to have Kamau wearing them right now, would be usefull to know.
and if we are already spending 5 inv slots we might as well use them to full effect
and one last thing. We should have picked more inv for Ricki after all.
More inventory on Ricki will always be useful, and I recommend getting that next.
Accessory is a different item type than Ring, so I think we’re good there.
It was stated in the “How to play” section that rings only take inventory slots when they are NOT worn and only two rings can be worn at once.
Plate armor is 5. HEAVY. So we gotta take off the boots, then?
Turn 1 (not Turn 0) I would recommend this loadout
Ricki: Rat Fang, Shield, Leather Armor, Rat Tails (5), lockpicks (free)
Kamau: Kamau’s Hilt, Shield, Longsword, Plate, Plate, Plate, Plate, Plate, Rat Tail (1), lockpicks, gold (4), cigs (free)
Lara: Longsword, Leather, Crit, Crit, Boots, Torch, lockpicks, lockpicks
I think having the 1 rat tail on ricki is smarter. It lets us burn it on an attack to clear room if looting is a priority. With all 5 Ricki’s load out is full for the foreseeable future.
Do we need to carry the gold? If we could deposit it with Paws or Lohk (or some with Paws and some with Lohk), we would have another free inventory slot.
Yep, we carry everything we own if we want to keep it. Haven’t been offered storage space, or given the option to ask. Paws did mention picking up loose change in the Warrens, so it’s possible that we’d have a slot tied up with gold either way.
We might get storage space in the estate, once we clear the dungeon out of it.
“Before we go, Paws, do you know a temple where we can get Regenerate cast?”
Please, stop.
You write the same damn thing under each page and even though it has always been ignored you can’t just accept it. It is LSN’s job to move the plot further and we don’t control each of the characters’ moves. We only get to decide what dungeon to explore, what to buy and what to do in a dungeon. Period.
Even if we could fully control the charachters, it is higly unlikely there is a possibility to regenerate a missing limb.
And LSN made it crystal clear that in THIS world, dead characters are gone forever. And even if such possibility exists, Kamau’s missing arm is a major plot point. It can’t be solved that easy.
> Kamau’s missing arm is a major plot point
So noone ever can ask anyone? what’s the harm in hearing “oh dear, that’s unfortunate. the only such thing I ever heard of is an old drunkard’s story about a magic spring on an island behind a sea of dragons.. you know then drunken tales” or any other filler? Or what’s your harm with this single-line comment that you could safely ignore like just anyone else does? Someone on the internet is wrong and you have to fix it? Really? Just leave it and move along., or downvote it into oblivion if you have. By answering and debunking it every single time, the best of you all complainers achieve, is to add fuel to the
xxx’s(sorry!) fire. IMHO OFC.There is no harm in asking questions. It’s just that we can’t do that. We are not allowed to choose what charachters say/ask. As a result, Tiltowait:
1) Wastes his time writing comments that have no sense;
2) Wastes time of those who read the comments;
3) Spreads misinformation. He makes it seem that we can ask question during intermissions even though we can’t. As a result, more people are writing comment that will never be taken into account by LSN.
Hypocrite.
On point 3.
i got confused 2 updates ago so that point checks out 😉
i would also add 4th.
4) What’s the goal? That DM gets annoyed and spends one update addresing this telling us “No, can’t do”? We just wasted an update and delayed actuall progress.
Troll? Excuse me? I’m not a troll, I’m trying to play a play-by-forum game. Don’t call me a troll, that’s pretty offensive.
> Someone on the internet is wrong and you have to fix it?
I get the idea that this is the answer.
I’m really sorry for that “
troll“(sorry!) part. No offense was intended there. I tried to think of a word which would describe a person insistent on advertising or achieving some goal in a way that’s irritating to others, and that was the only thing that I could think of. In afterthrough, I can easily see how you could find it offensive. I’ll erase that, and change if I ever find the proper word.a person insistent on advertising or achieving some goal in a way that’s irritating to others
Holy crap I still do not get it. What’s so irritating about it? We ask around and see if anyone knows a temple where Regeneration can be cast. If it takes a quest to do it, fine, let’s do it. I’m saying ask some questions, you know, like RPG players do all the time to get plot hooks?
I am beginning to feel that there are some players, the ones who spend a disproportionate amount of time on Twitter and Discord and Twitch and all the others, who apparently think this is “their” game and only they are the ones who get to play. And it’s very hurtful that an “outsider” (i.e. someone who participates in the forum of a play-by-forum game) is trying to have input.
They think they can read the mind of LSN and tell us what he’s thinking when we haven’t even asked a simple question. Look at how many times that’s happened in this thread alone.
> it is higly (sic) unlikely there is a possibility to regenerate a missing limb.
WTF is wrong with asking??
I really do not get this gigantic resistance to doing what is a totally obvious move. He’s missing an arm; get it Regenerated. But it ain’t gonna happen if we don’t make it happen.
Where’d you get this bizarre idea that we don’t get to control the characters? It’s a play-by-forum game; LSN does them all the time. Of course we get to control the characters.
There’s no problem with asking, but asking multiple times after the idea was shot down is annoying.
LSN has said that Intermissions are for moving the story, which (very likely) means that the only choices we get are the ones he gives us, like shopping and which dungeon to go to.
From the point of game design, why would LSN give Kamau the disadvantage of missing an arm if it was easy to fix? The disadvantage was a planned part of the game. (Personally, I like that we have to work with/around the disadvantage.) From the point of story telling, it’d make sense to not talk about regenerating it, if it can even be regenerated, before explaining the backstory where he lost it.
I’m not speaking for everyone when I say this, but the reason I don’t want to ask is I don’t see the point… at least not yet. I feel safe saying it’s not going to be possible any time soon if it’s even possible. I’d guess it’d part of a reward from one of the side dungeons from Kamau’s bond.
You know, I also wanted to get information (by asking) about:
But I see that the majority of players don’t vote for asking.
And now I see that asking (and answering) a big number of questions will probably disrupt the way this comic-game intended to go with shifting the focus to playing which is maybe not so good.
Also, it is LSN responsibility to keep the balance between telling the story and providing playing options (where we propose what to do including asking questions).
And, of course, I don’t think he will totally ignore some justified (or highly voted) requests.
Once again, nothing is wrong with asking.
However, the suggestion to ask about regeneration appeared in the comments multiple times and LSN ignored it every single time which means that he is not going to allow us to do so.
You can read minds? That’s amazing! Say, can you do it again? Can you tell me what I had for breakfast?
Two scoops of self-esteem.
Wrong, it was oatmeal. Maybe stop telling people what they’re thinking without asking first.
Hmm, copper rings are just loot. The Ko-fi hint for this kobold friend has them examining a blue-gem ring (with what look like goggles on their head), so maybe the Warrens will let us upgrade rings. Don’t lead us astray, Paws!
Speaking of loot, we have 4 slots left and will have 2 with the free stuff. Back in the Chapel, running out of space was our biggest restriction on loot rather than running out of HP, though we were also worried about breaking the armour that let us progress. With 4 sets of thieves tools, I think we should be aggressively unlocking all we can.
but unlocking stuff to use up thief tools just means we have even more stuff to carry!!
and just watch. For once Ricki won’t be throwing them away. She spitefull like that.
i just hope this is enough to make people pick inventory expansion next level up.
Do you know if we pile up things by the exist. Would we then by able to take them with us as we are leaving? Beyond our normall inventory. This time our Merchant friend waited forus at the Dungeon Doorstep (figurative) sooooo?
or to much munchikning
Nope, we lost the dagger by the exit in the Chapel despite having lots of inventory space by the end by burning most of the loot we picked up. Once the dungeon goal is met, the dungeon is over, do not pass Go, do not collect $200. We might get a pass for thrown weapons used to defeat a boss since we could collect them before end of the turn in which we win.
Of course, we are free to leave stuff on the ground, and if we get back to it (say, with a party member with 2 movement who can ferry 5 weight of items between rooms in addition to taking an action) then it’s ours. All that matters is that we have everything we want to keep in our inventory at end of dungeon.
At the moment Kamau already have 11 Def (+5 from plate armor and a new +1 purple shield, see CHARACTERS page).
So it seems it is possible to utilize both boots and a plate armor simultaneously and receive +5 from plate armor.
Wasn’t it that the maximal possible defense is depicted instead of the current one? I remember when Lara was not wearing the golden helmet, but its defense capability was nevertheless displayed.
Well, there was a change from 10 to 11 Def, so I think now it is correct.
Also, I don’t see any reason to depict possible (not current) value.
Looking at Kamau looking at the ring:
Kamau: “My precious!”
Paws: “Wrong ring!”
Lara: “The One Ring?”
Ricki: “Huh?”
