Dungeon 3 Turn 60
————
Kamau returns to the entrance room to keep an eye on things, but it looks like everything is quiet here for now. The front door remains open.
Meanwhile, Ricki operates the winch, gradually putting more and more tension on the rope until…
“SON OF A FU—”
After ringing the bell several times in succession, the crank on the winch breaks off. Looks like the bell can’t be rung anymore, but the rope remains in place for climbing. Also, despite the sound of the bell being strangely muted inside the chapel, the bats have been shaken loose from the ceiling by the vibrations! They look disoriented right now, but will probably start attacking soon.
Ricki feels like she and/or Kamau should look around and see what else has changed.
Ricki climbs up the rope on her way to check the belfry.
Thank you LSN for letting Ricki get the heck out of that room. Those purple bats look SCARY. Looks like we’re still on.
We should group up asap. I suspect Drow may be more receptive so that should be a priority. Black Blob could be a boss monster in graveyard. It might have spawned because it’s turn 60, not because the bell wrung. If I had to guess, it would be susceptible to Holy since we’ve got lots of nice Holy damage items.
I think we should give the fly a few turns to clear out bats for us. May not be a problem though, not much reason to go through the middle of the winch room anymore.
My priority is on figuring out what happened. There weren’t many threats left in the top of the tower, so let’s let Ricki go chat while Kamau explores the dangerous area so we can make a plan. (On the selfish and practical side, I’d like to see as much as I can before the weekend.)
I’ve a little regret now for not spending the time to clear out bats, but given how crunched we were for time (and how they let me play around with checking how movement in the room works after combat), I feel it was justified. Kamau is definitely going to need to clear that space out, hopefully the ladies will be able to assist with ranged attacks from above before his martyr complex gets him into trouble.
I’m going to guess that the purple bats are a stronger variant (maybe vampire bats? or dire bats?) and Ricki should not be facing 5 bats in one group, even if all of them were normal.
So yeah, I’m all for her getting the hell out of there and trying to talk to the drow. (Though she might be -willing- to listen now, but perhaps lacking the capacity from temporal hearing loss because of the bells still ringing in her ears.)
And my guess is that the black puddles are because of turn 60 and have nothing to do with the bell ringing. They very well might have been the reason for Ricki’s omnious feeling in turn 50.
One more thing: The bell did change colour from that blue-ish green (same hue as the tarnished armour) to yellow. I wonder if that has any deeper meaning and/or if other items could be changed that way. (Like maybe the sphere, if we hit it against the inside of the bell that’s resting on the floor?)
also….maybe the -yellow- chest is open now? 😀
“SON OF A FU—”
Please, Ricki is a “she/her” and not a son. On the other hand: Yes, yes, Ricki had nothing to do with this! And if we had known that the winch was a breakable item, we had never let Ricki operate it.
+1 for Ricky RNG joke. Actually, I think it was not %-chance, but granted, so we don’t keep on ringing for the whole next week just to see what’s killed by the sound 😉
Ricki: Go back to the belfry and see if you can get the drow’s attention now
Kamau: Head downstairs and back to the pope’s room to beat up any skeletons you see. If you don’t see any, check out the graveyard.
I don’t think we need to switch Kamau to solar yet, I don’t think there will be 5 skeletons in that room.
And as suggested by text, I think we should have somebody check out the graveyard before proceeding with anything else.
Kamau is in solar armor right now, thus if you want him in leather armor, you would need to suggest him to change his armor.
Back to chandelier room takes two moves. Door stairs are a move. Also, Ricki should probably not climb past the flies of unknown disposition, and also avoid the glass.
Ricki could climb the outside of the tower, thus bypassing the flies without passing by them, as we already did when we went up in the past.
Yeah, that’s the path that goes over the glass.
Ricki: Get off rope and move down ladder on left side. Holy bolt a bat. avoid glass
Kamau: Double Move up and to the right to winch room. Stay out of bat sight
Kamau will probably get mobbed by both groups of bats in Ricki’s room. Ideally Ricki can deal with the small group and kamau tanks the bigger group when he gets up next turn.
“Holy bolt a bat” – a regular one (black/green, not purple/yellow), because Ricki can one-shoot those, right? – Also: hopefully the bats downstairs will keep themselves busy with the fly guy. (Which hopefully does not make the fly guy fly up and interact negatively with Kamau or Ricki.)
Assume for now that those 5 bats will all attack as one group. Let’s not send Ricki through there alone. Plus side, Kamau made it through the room with the ashen skeletons without being attacked even though they’ve been activated, so the skeletons probably won’t jump out at anyone on the ladder.
I could accept taking ranged shots down the chimney from the top, as those bats haven’t flown up that way yet, and I feel that would be more effective at breaking up the group.
Or from the ladder, while on the level with the skeletons. As the bats are positioned now, Ricki could shoot 4 bats in one line if the penetration power of the magic bolt was just great enough. Should have opened the chest with the M249 & ammo.
The bats look like they are drawn as separate groups in different sections of the room. That said, the rope is between both and kamau may attract both groups at once.
They definitely started as separate groups, and especially with the rope we may have two areas on that floor. Still, I’d really rather test that theory with Kamau.
Ricki: Keep climbing up another room, then avoid the glass and climb up the outside of the tower. Ask the drow if she’s okay and if she’s interested in helping clear this Dungeon.
Kamau: Leave both sets of thieves tools here. Go to the right and rush past the sun-head to the balcony. Pick up the bow and check out the graveyard. Estimate how much it would hurt to drop down to the yard from that balcony, just in case that was necessary.
If we get a successful recruit, we might end up in a situation where we need to run out Kamau’s Remorse and finish up with Ricki and our new friend. We might even be able to game it, putting Ricki in intentional danger to force Kamau out of an otherwise-lethal fight.
Kamau: Also avoid glass trap in middle room (yes, K. has boots, nevertheless) and show us the middle room while passing through, please.
Ricki: …or what they might be interested in. (And if the “they” from Prologue-3 is the correct pronoun or just to sound mysterious.) And, there is no burning cigarette on a flammable wood floor, is it?!
Eh, she’s female presenting. I welcome being corrected.
If anything, the fang there has me thinking she may be more vampire than drow. Still elven ears, but there could be many reasons for those. Still, could just be goth.
Not worried about the floor, the back wall is stone and there’s an iron grate, so I assume the floor is also stone. The webs are a fire hazard, though.
Ricki: Keep climbing up another room, then avoid the glass and climb up the outside of the tower. Ask the drow if she’s okay and if she’s interested in helping clear this Dungeon.
Kamau: Leave both sets of thieves tools here. Go to the right and bullrush the sunhead onto the balcony
Going to suggest we try something interesting. We have no reason to believe the sunheads won’t shoot at undead, and it’s probably powerful enough to be useful if we leave it there to blast at stuff in the graveyard.
Does anyone have any idea what/which area panels 6-7-8 could present?
I checked the only outside view of the chapel, https://dungeoneyes.com/intermission-2-page-17/ – and it doesn’t really match anything.
My first thought was, OMG, we’ve just mutilated the drow somehow, and it’s some kind of black blood dripping from the tower. But that doesn’t make sense. On the 6-7-8 panel we see a gap in the wall, and some greenish path. There’s no tower wall there, as there’s no such gap in the tower.
So, it’s either the outer wall, with gap/entrace/exit that we somehow have not yet seen (rly?), or something completly different. Actually, the more I look at it, the more this greenish path looks like a kind of sickly-green river. If so, then those ‘black blobs’ would be a creature emerging from the depths. Woken up or lured by the sound. It could be the thing that initially damaged the whole chapel, now lured here, thinking it has to re-ensure the bells don’t sound again. Sounds scary. And Kamau’s relatively low on HP.
But then, on that intermission-2-p-17, there’s clearly no river anywhere near the chapel area.. For a tiny moment, I thought that it may be not walls, but graves, and a grassy path between them, but geometry doesn’t agree at all. Geesh.
My thought was door leading out of graveyard. But we won’t know for sure till we peek. That said, it may not be a monster it may just be life draining blight or something that spreads
I think that is a space between two gravestones.
Nice catch, I had the scale completely off. Agreed, in which case whatever we’re looking at is small… For now.
Sidenote: Pardon my doubts, but, actually, why do we assume that Kamau cannot go through the holes in the wall? I don’t remember if we ever tried asking Kamau to try crawling. Maybe it’s just that Ricky can go there easily, and Kamau will have to use more time and effort?
Looking at the image:
It doesn’t seem impossible for Kamau to fit there.. and that would perfectly solve our problems with some very interesting chests that could hold i.e. very helpful potions..
Dungeon 2, turn 1: “Ricki inspects the giant crack in the wall. It leads to a small tunnel behind the wooden boards on the walls, probably made by rats. It looks like it leads downward. The tunnel is just the perfect size for Ricki to climb up or down, but too small for Kamau. Using the tunnel would count the same as moving to another room.”
Thanks!!
I believe it was stated in dungeon 2 by LSN when we first encountered them.
