Dungeon 2 Turn 15
————
Kamau knocks out the remaining drunk, then piles his unconscious body up with the other one. He then picks up the rusty longsword and the empty mug that they dropped.
Meanwhile, Ricki uses her thieves’ tools to open the locked chest. Inside she finds some old armour and a strange purple lens. She keeps the lens but leaves the armour where it is for now due to its weight.
“Oh, I’ve seen those before. They appear in dungeons fairly commonly, the same way strange monsters do I suppose. It should help us avoid getting caught off guard again.”
“Yay! Finally some real dungeon loot! I bet there’s good stuff in the other locked chests I saw, too!”
“…Saw where?”
“Also, did you just throw those lockpicks away after you used them?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Ricki decides to keep her thieves’ tools.
…THIS time.

CHAIN ARMOUR, RUSTY
Armour
Def +3. 30% chance to break after being attacked.
Weight 3, Cost 11
MAGIC LENS
Consumable
Use on an enemy at range to learn their stats. Someone who can see enemies through walls can use this item through walls as well.
Weight 1, Cost 30
Ricki:Tell him about your magic eyes. You can trust him.
Ricki is a strange child
or adult idk how old she is
Ricki:
Use the lens to learn the centipede’s stats.
Kamau:
Give the empty mug to Ricki and put on the rusty chain.
Actually not possible, thought Kamau had 2 empty inventory slots (he has 0)
Lol Ricky.
It looks like we have 2 options now: go down and fight the skeletons or go up past the drunks with the barrel to figure out the rest of the dungeon. My vote is to fight the skeletons we need to figure out how the levers work, and this seems the quickest way to find out.
Ricky make sure to point out the glass to kamau.
We should use the new item she has to check those skeletons too. If kamau can’t handle them, we are in trouble.
We should save the magic lens until we see the rest of the dungeon. We don’t know which levers we need to turn on, so we might not need to go into some rooms like the skeleton family room, + there may be a big bad creature elsewhere.
We should also have somebody put on the rusty armour, so that means:
Ricki: Unlock Kamau’s ball and chain
Kamau: Put on the rusty armour and swap Ricki’s beer for the rusty sword.
After this, I recommend both of them heading down the ladder (avoiding glass!). That way, they can hit the valve and then immediately retreat from the skeleton family, which may be important especially if that 30% break chance is per incoming attack.
Interesting times!
Now we got confirmation that the chests with the grey/black plate are indeed locked.
Also, we have more stuff than we can carry atm, therefore I guess that warrants having Ricki try her luck with the tools again immediately and try to unlock the ball and chain (we are not likely going to find a key for that in this dungeon, I’m guess), so he can then put on the rusty armour and still carry more stuff (so I did +1 CombatDoctor‘s post).
Planning ahead, I think it would be useful to go kill the skeleton group next, because I’m assuming that we will have to do that sooner or later (because of the valve/lever). I’m also hoping that with 6 defence (as long as the rusty armour lasts at least), Kamau will be able to withstand them indefinitely, while Ricki can pick them off one by one.
Oooooor, we could have Ricki swap nearly her entire inventory (ale, leather armour, tools and lens) for the rusty armour and the rusty sword, then she would have 3 defense (and Kamau 4) and they could do some serious damage together without having to worry about her getting damaged all the time. Of course, with our luck, the armour (and probably the sword, too) will break in the first round of combat and then Ricki will be defenceless again. But if (who am I kidding, WHEN) this inevitably happens, Kamau can interpose again, they can withdraw from the fight and have her get the leather armour again.
Thinking even further ahead, I am still very much in dispute with myself which skill Ricki should get next. Prime candidates atm in my mind are: Haul I (+2 inventory space, we always seems to have too little of that), improvisation (for when the tools are gone, we can still pick locks with surplus daggers) and… I wanted to say “backstab”, but now that I re-read the description (“Backstab I: +1 Atk when attacking a target an ally is also attacking.”), I’m not even sure it would work, when Kamau is interposing.
At least the “careful thief” has already paid off. 😀
And the lens might be worthwhile to keep and sell rather than using it, 30 gold is the highest amount of “cost” we have seen on loot this far. Might be enough to buy some permanent armour or some backpack perhaps, if we actually get to visit a shop someday. XD
And I agree, Ricki should tell Kamau about her dungeon eyes. He’s been nothing but helpful and loyal to her so far and it might entice him even to be slightly more inclined to make the dungeon crawling with her a regular thing, seeing how otherwise her unique talent would go to waste…
Also: avoid the glass (if moving past it) for both of them.
EDIT: I mean with the rusty armour (3 DEF) Ricki could probably even go through the first rat tunnel and battle the 3 normal rats (3*1 attack should be cancelled out by 3 DEF, hopefully), and later on the dire rat on her own. And try her luck with the locked chest there afterwards (if the tools are not used up by unlocking the ball and chain). It’s risky, though, if the armour gives out too soon, she’ll rack up damage (and she only has 2 HP to her name atm) and Kamau might even leave the dungeon (with all the loot he is carrying at that moment) because of that.
I maintain that we shouldn’t bother sticking around to finish off the skeletons. Have Kamau intercede, Ricki flip the valve, then both get out of there. If we take on any skeleton, it should be the one next to a treasure chest and holding a wand. They might have good drops but fighting four of anything is risky.
For skills, I’m also for Haul I, Ricki needs to be able to carry equipment and also bring back loot from Small-only areas. As long as we don’t need to abandon this dungeon, having a good meal should cure Ricki’s Malnourished in addition to leveling up. Backstab I probably doesn’t work with Intercede, which makes it less impressive. The other good pick is Light Armour Proficiency, Kamau can shield Ricki but if she’s less fragile then they can work together more. If all armour takes one inventory slot per point of defense, then it isn’t as big a deal that Ricki would be missing out on an ability while wearing +4 armour.
If any reader didn’t notice: it was CarefulThief ability firing for the first time and role-played perfectly 😀 what a face Ricky made hahha 😀
The newly-found armor looks small, but who knows, maybe the game rules involve magical stretching? Can Kamau wear this surplus armor? He totally should!
RIcky: take a peek down below and use TheMagicLens on the skelly family. Maybe we’ll learn they are super-fragile or something
EDIT: oh my. It’s consumable. Maybe don’t. The centipede actually looks more important, it’s worth checking if it is poisonous or something.
I think we need to find ways to bypass enemies rather than fighting them. I think beer can get us past the drunks without a fight but who knows what else we might get against skellies.
I say use lens on centipede. Knowledge is power and so is more inventory space
Yes to bypassing enemies, no to scanning the centipede. I think it’d be more important to scan the halflings guarding the chest by the middle valve, since Ricki would have to deal with them on her own and it’d be nice to see what we’re getting into. The centipede is probably reachable by Kamau, and there’s no guarantee we’ll even have time to fight it given how long it’s taking to figure out the main quest.
xD Thank you Kamau! Ricki: You owe him. Undo that chain! Please!
Kamau: swap the ball and chain for the Armor (hopefully keeping the ball and chain safe. We might need to throw it later.) Then go duck it out with the three drunks.
On page 12 we said we were going to set up a mini game near the entrance to distract the drunks after we were done with the fight and the chest. I assume this is still a go?
That would only make sense if we had a way of returning light to the first room, too. (As somebody pointed out back when we talked about this plan first, Kamau picked up the torch and therefore the first room is in darkness now, so new drunks would not be able to read the instructions to our mini-game anyways.)
It’s not yet been tested, if Kamau could put the torch back onto the wall (Ricki is too small) or if that doesn’t work at all (there is no wall mounting for the torch depicted, but that might just be LSN not bothering to draw one, just like he avoids drawing bodies (at least dead or unconscious ones that Ricki and Kamau caused).
Ricki : Unlock Kamau’s Ball and Chain
Kamau : Continue being fatherly to Ricki, and encourage her not to throw away the thieve’s tools when they unlock! Yeah! (Or grab the armor and save it for a good fight.)
