Dungeon 12 Turn 33
————
Lara and Cordy return to the room above while trading the wand of mend between them. They also want to pick up some of the items lying on the ground, but they can’t trade and pick stuff up at the same time. Lara then returns to the room below. She’s not sure why she came up here in the first place, to be honest.
Ricki continues to be paralyzed, but at least she’s not taking damage.
Amadeusz quickly swims through the well to explore what he hopes is the final room. On the way past the group of skulls, five of them turn out to be crabs which nip at his feet for a total of 5 unblockable damage because of how surprised he is that it happened. Nobody could have foreseen that there were crabs there. We are all surprised.
What he finds in the final room, however, is 100% predictable.
the Giant Enemy Crab trope, I wish I’d seen it coming.
if I recall correctly, crabs have a weakness in the armour of their underside.
A pity Ricki is unavailable.
AND…I don’t think the thing on the crab is a poison source. There’s no dark-purple colored cloud coming off it,it might seriously be skippable (I hope).
The water all around it is purple.
The poison source are eggs. Something is laying poison eggs. The giant crab has eggs on her back. Clearly this is not the source of poison.
Lara should not have moved up last turn. I’m gonna post a plan based on her being where she was before.
Plan: Save Amad
Lara: Drop wand of mend in the pile. Move right, move down, attack Crabs
Amad: Move Left and stay away from crabs as much as possible.
Cordy: Move back down and pick up Pouch, harpoon, rope and Paw.
Amad has 8 def underwater and 3 hp. He’s moving 2 rooms which is 6 dmg and he’s taking 1 drowning leaving him at 2 hp. If all the crabs gang up on him then he’s dead. I’m hoping the crabs will go after Lara but that might still include Amad since they are so close together.
Turn after Amad can swim past since he’ll only be taking 1 room of dmg and there will be one less crab.
Other option is for Amad to swim to upper crab room, but it seems likely the crab can grab and hold or just do enough dmg to kill Amad. I’d consider this option more risky.
Lara has now moved back down (but I didn’t change any art).
Ah,so you DO come down here to comment outside of Intermissions.
Plan: Save Amad but avoid drowning, since I don’t trust the crabs not to target him. He has 3 hp and 8 defense (after underwater debuff)
Lara was not supposed to move on the plan posted last page, so hopefully her positioning is corrected back to the pile o’ crap.
Note: we’re having quite a bit of debate on Discord about which plan is safer — both have risk of Amadeusz dying depending on what the crabs (and the remaining Swarmfish one room above in the central shaft) do. I think this is slightly safer, because we’re trading 1 point of guaranteed drowning for 1 point of potential crab (if all 4 remaining crabs target Amadeusz), and the fish should have to attack Lara on her way down to fight the crabs.
4 crabs + 6 water is 10 hp damage, which Amadeusz should survive if he can get to air.
If he moves left and the 4 crabs target him anyway (possible), he’d take 4 crabs + 6 water +1 drowning and die.
Lara: Drop wand of mend in the pile. Move right, move down, attack Crabs
Amad: Move Left, then move up, left, and pull yourself onto dry land where the pile of stuff is.
Cordy: Move back down and pick up Pouch, harpoon, rope and Paw.
Thus far we haven’t had a case where the crabs were revealed, but not engaged. If they still deal unblockable damage, then both of these plans kill Lara.
while that is true, they have very much attacked people while being engaged, and that was very much not unblockable.
They’re not a surprise anymore, they won’t be unblockable.
I’m not sure why someone thought this was a good idea, but looking a lot like TPK time if we don’t get really lucky on a lot of rolls.
Plan: Hail Mary
Ama: Swim upward to avoid the piles of skulls on the floor, go past the big crab and grab the closest chest.
Lara: Mend yourself. If you somehow aren’t already at the loot pile, head there now.
Cordy: Double move right. End turn on the left side ledge.
Ricki: You can do it!
Reasoning: We don’t know if the crab will kill Ama in one hit. We do know that wading through the crabs leftward has a chance of killing either Ama, Lara or both if unengaged ones deal unblockable damage like undiscovered ones do. Maybe there’s something in the chests upstairs that will let Ama live. If not, we might have to have him chill down there while the rest of the party either heals up, gathers mushies and finishes playing with ghouls, or abandons.
FFS, why did we have Amadeusz do this? We knew there were going to be skull crabs (guaranteed damage) and that the dungeon boss was probably going to be in this room. Why are we still trading HP for the sake of scouting when our characters are already low on health and healing?
This dungeon is a wash; we should abandon it ASAP and hopefully not lose anyone along the way.
I wonder as well. We could have revealed the crabd with zing.. we’re lucky there were just 5 crabs, not 8
We actually can’t abandon while ricki is paralyzed. We’re locked in till at least then.
I think the thinking was that Amad could swim above the crabs and they’d leave him alone. If you picture his body horizontal in the water (the way people *actually* swim), there would’ve been plenty of room above the crabs, so it should’ve worked. Unfortunately, looking back over past turns now, I see that our characters all kind of dangle vertically in the water while swimming. Dungeon logic I guess 🙁
Oh no poor Amad 🙁
And I have my own worry: The crabs dont do unblockable while out of hiding, but what if they get to hide again if left alone for a turn? We really cant deal with another crab ambush.
Lara is too low on hp to kill them all before drowning so this gets the skeletons to keep them busy for us.
Amad eat his mushroom for an extra hp while getting to safety. We desperately need useful items from those chests there.
This plan is also based on Lara being at our loot pile like last page said.
Amad: Swim upward to avoid the piles of skulls on the floor, go past the big crab and eat your mushroom on dry land
Lara: Equip harpoon. Move left. Move down. Go to the right side of all the crabs(using tunnel ceilling in case that helps) and sting an armed skeleton so they come keep the crabs too busy to hide again.
Cordy: Move right twice.
I’ve just noticed a thing. Our characters ‘swim’ vertically, especially Amad. He didn’t swim horizontally like we would expect, so at that tighter place with little crabs he couldn’t swim sitck to the ceiling, and that’s why the crabs could reach him, it was cramped enough for him to almost walk over them.
But here, it seems there’s much more space. If he swims directly upwards, the big crab shouldn’t be able to reach him, judging by its claws. But it’s hard to be sure of that, it may have some kind of arms that we don’t see due to ‘face-on camera angle’..
Also. Big crab. Eggs. Do you see that pile of eggs on its head? There’s a skull there. I wonder if the small crabs actually hatched from those eggs. Big mommy is here. That skull on the top of this eggpile might be a fresh crab, and it might indicate more small crabs will spawn. Also, it may be possible to crush this eggpile just like all those before, and maybe we dont need to kill the crab to clear the water temporarily. Raid the crab, crush last eggpile, leave the boss alone, gtfo and sweep quest puzzle along the way? Might be possible, but I don’t think that’s a good plan though
I’m concerned having Lara go to the right side of the crabs will have them all attack her, even if she walks along the roof. If the skeletons come attack her too (because she’s attacking them), will she die?
No, she has 17 defense underwater with harpoon so can tank it even if everything hits her.
3(poison) + 2(fish) + 7(skellies) + 5(crabs) = 17
I think you mean to have Lara move right then move down. Otherwise this is probably our best bet.
Oopsie you’re right. LSN, this is what I meant but it is not letting me edit anymore.
The big crab just go an exclamation mark – trying to move past it has a very high risk of being attacked.
If that attack goes through Amads def or grapples him he is essentially dead – way too.high risk imo
Amad should eat his mushroom before swimming past the crab, no? Eating it gives him back half of his remaining HP, so if he’s at zero after the crab attack, the mushroom won’t help him.
Half of the mushroom’s remaining HP, no?
Eat the giant crab. Swallow that baby whole like Scooby Doo. Nat 20 auto succeeds so we got a 5 percent chance
Well, bad idea to use Amy to scout again. He lost almost all the health he regained from those steaks. He should just swim outside of the crab’s range & check out if those chests have some incredible anzi-crustacean weapons.
Cordy’s at 1 mere HP.The best thing he can fo without drinking a potion or using the wand he traded already is to challenge Petmaster.
Ricki is still stunlocked.
I’m really hope the Discord pulls off some awesome plan.
Kat’s smart, Deusz has a mushy to eat, and we know where Lara is now.
Lara: Drop wand of mend in the pile. Move right, move down, attack Crabs
Amad: Move Left, then eat your mushy. Even if attacked by 4 crabs, this is survivable for him.
Cordy: Move back down and pick up Pouch, harpoon, rope and Paw.
Note: Giant Boss Crab is likely to have… interesting… mechanics. We cannot safely stay in that room. He may have a grapple, a ranged attack, unblockable damage, or just hit like a giant crab. It is VERY doubtful that we can avoid his attacks by swimming above him. Gambling on 8 def (after water penalties) and 3 hp being enough to survive a round to get to the chests is going to end poorly.
Oh yeah, I wasn’t counting on him being able to dodge King Crab. The “swim up” portion of the command was to avoid the little pile of skulls.
I don’t think Ama is guaranteed to survive a round with him. I just felt the odds were better than the risk of losing both Lara and Ama if the revealed but unengaged crabs do unblockable damage.
