Dungeon 2 Turn 32
————
Ricki pops open the chest and finds another potion of healing, as well as… some oven mitts? It makes sense to find these in a dungeon under a tavern, she supposes, but she isn’t sure how much use they’ll be. She leaves both these new items here for now, as her inventory is once again full.
She also quickly notes that the hole in this room leads to the right, and that pushing a heavy chest around isn’t going to clean up or cover the glass so much as shuffle it around uselessly. Ricki would need some kind of specialized implement in order to get rid of these hazards, but she can’t think of anything that would work.
Meanwhile Kamau engages in a drunken brawl. The snale’s attack has left him tipsy, and he misses his wild swing. Fortunately the drunk with the torch does the same. Kamau takes no damage, but also deals none.
He has one more turn of drunkenness.

OVEN MITTS
Accessory
Def +1 against fire damage.
Weight 1, Cost 4
Ricki: Swap a dagger for the mitts and put them on, then climb up and help Kamau take out the drunks.
Kamau: Keep fighting
We probably have time to bring the potion to the guy after they knock out the drunks. Unless something drastically changed, they should still be targeting the first person they attacked, so it should be safe for Ricki.
I don’t know if the mitts will work for Kamau if he can only use one of them. In dnd at least, you usually have to wear both gloves/boots to gain the benefits. I imagine we’re under the same restrictions here.
Update to Dungeon Eyes, changes to icons, thanks for your suggestions @Tiltowait. We’ll see how these go, and update accordingly.
That’s great! And thanks!
But that link is blocked by a sign-on. 🙁
in addition to the above:
Ricki: leave the empty mug behind and take the healing potion with you instead. Also, be mindful to stay out of the snales reach and attack the same drunk as Kamau is, in order to knock one of them out this turn for sure (unless he misses again).
on a completely unrelated note, but because of the post on the dungeon eyes front page:
LSN, allow me to say I am sorry for your loss. I only know what you wrote in your short epitaph, but it sounds like your dad was a wonderful person and the world is worse off without him. I am grateful that he inspired you to tell stories to others, like this one here and many others before (Island of Starlight, Dwarf Dungeon, WSWFG, Awesome sword, The awesome sword wanes, Hats,… to mention some of them) and hopefully also many more to look forward to in the future.
I wish you and (and the rest of your family) strength for dealing with not having him in your life any more and all the best for the near (and far) future.
*sends out a firefly to you*
well whaddya know i bet the oven mitts are for clearing glass.
we’re gonna need both of those then
Uhm, actually, the description says the mitts work against heat (Def +1 against fire damage).
Also, I would imagine the broom (in the top level of the centipede room) is for clearing glass. In combination with a suitable receptacle for the shards.
If that hole goes right, then there are 2 rats and a dire rat +keys thought there. Our biggest liability is that Ricki can only get hurt twice before Kamau leaves. So since Ricki will need to run past, grab keys then run back, we’ll need 4 armor. Leather, booze, bucket and buckler would work but we’ll need to prepare.
If we use the potion on the injured then we might have a new ally to replace Kamau… I think deal with drunks at ladder then go heal injured drunk after
Using the wand to pick off rats would make the key room easier. The bucket miss chance isn’t important when we auto hit. If it goes down to just the dire rat, then armor and shield is enough to avoid taking damage.
I think dire rats have at least 3hp so a 1-3 chance to insta kill it. Im also unclear if ranged happens first, then melee. If it doesn’t then dire rat would still damage. Also, Shied may break at any time and we don’t really need more rat tails. If we run past with 4 defense then guaranteed no damage and only 1 damage on the second turn if shield breaks
Can Kamau wear the Oven Mitts on his feet? That might help with glass. It would still make him look as stupid as I feel for thinking this idea even if it doesn’t work. It’s a win win result! 😀
Actually, Kamau is already wearing boots, the description of which (“Protects slightly against some ground-based hazards.”) seems to suggest that they might help with the broken glass. Why change/switch out that for something that is supposed to help against heat (and go on hands instead of feet, too)?
Mind you, if he had to cross a spread of glowing coals on the floor, that might change things.
Do y’all think we could use the cheez to lure/distract rats?
That…yeah, that’s a possibility. We could see if the rat king would be willing to trade access to the cheez for access to the chests behind him. We might upset the barkeep though, if the cheez is necessary for serving and we give it to the rats, though we could also try to bluff that we had nothing to do with it.
We need to switch the switch labelled “1” in the map (thanks!), and currently I do not have an idea how to get there except through the grate, and for that we
Ricki: Leave behind a dagger and mug to take the mitts and potion with you. Go up and trade the mitts and potion for the shield and the bucket, and equip the shield. Attack the same drunk as Kamau, using the dagger you kept.
Kamau: Put on mitts. Use your hilt to knock out a drunk without a torch.
Torches deal fire damage. Mitts are basically armor against the torch, so let’s let the drunk light up the room for us.
Note: According to my notes, drunks have 5 HP and 2 defense. This means that if Ricki uses the rusty longsword, they can deal 7 damage together and KO a drunk in one turn. However, we have bad luck with rusty weapons, and the rusty longsword gives Ricki a lot more power on her own, which she’ll need to be to change valves.
Of course, if Kamau whiffs then Ricki won’t have dealt any damage. If she used the sword, the drunk would go down to 4 HP and would still drop next turn to hilt plus dagger.
Also, it’d be neat to check if these drunks only have 4 HP left by crossing the glass. They didn’t trigger the rat trap above though, so I think they just started here.
Besides what I said in my reply to CombatDoctor and Swift, it is clear that we should first bring the potion to the poisoned guy upstairs. While it is “healing” and not “cure poison”, there is no “cheap-ale-poisoning” entry with Kamau, thus let’s hope that poison can be cured by the potion.
