Dungeon 1 Turn 26
————
Enacting her plan, Ricki heads to the floor above Kamau’s cell and unlocks the door there, expending her thieves’ tools. Yes, expending ALL of them. That’s how thieves’ tools work. Are YOU a professional thief from a whimsical fantasy setting? Yeah, didn’t think so.
Ricki then strains to lift another ball and chain out of the crate and rolls it across the floor towards the floor that she noticed appears to have been chipped away at and weakened slightly. The heavy steel ball rolls closer, closer…
…then breaks through the floor, lands directly on Kamau’s ball and chain, and… shatters. While Kamau’s remains completely unaffected.
“Oh COME ON!!”
“If you’d told me what you were doing, I could’ve warned you that would happen. These things aren’t well made, but they’re enchanted to be unbreakable when locked.”
“But how are we going to get you out now?! I only had one set of lockpicks, I can’t get the chain off your ankle!”
“I can carry like two of these without a problem.”
“…Oh.”
“Did you say you used an entire SET of lockpicks on that door?”
Oh, don’t YOU start, too.
Kamau climbs up his cell door like a ladder and exits his cell.
Well in that case I suppose we should move out. Kamau can grab another ball from the box, and instead of fighting the rats can maybe try and kill them with the ball bowling style
While we’re at it, maybe we can ask him if he knows where there’s any food, medicine, or any other items we could make use of.
And while we’re bowling, roll a ball down the level below the rats, to trigger that taupe trap on the ground from a safe distance! Who knows, maybe the trap will shoot arrows you can use later?
If (!) you do bowling indeed, you should make absolutely sure that the “bowling ball” does not roll down into the room with the guard! Otherwise they could sound an alert!
Kamau: make a judgement if you would be deadlier with another ball and chain from the box or with the remainder of the sword. Depending on your result (and whether or not you would have to drop stuff that you currently have in your inventory!) either pick up another chain and ball from the box and attack the 3 rats in the top level with that or with your own sword. Try to shield Ricki from the rats during the fight, if necessary.
Ricki: follow in safe distance and if necessary and possible without harming Kamau, help in the fight by throwing the dagger at one rat. Pick the dagger up again, once all rats are dead. Ask if Kamau has any other useful knowledge about the jail (e.g. layout), the staff of the jail (including dogs) or the items in the jail, or if he wants to share any useful information about himself (e.g. he can “lay on hands” or suchlike).
On the way out, and after killing the rats, Kamau might want to grab the torch.
…and give it to Ricki, because Kamau already has one hand occupied with the steel ball and might need to have a hand to use his sword, while Ricki can wield her dagger (or another tool whatsoever) with one hand and the torch in the other hand.
If inventory space is free, go get the rat tail before leaving…
When leaving the middle cell, close the door. If a guard comes down to check, they might need to climb down to the lowest level before noticing the escape, and need to climb up again to rise the alarm. This might give you one or two extra rounds when you need them at the cost of a free action. (Moving the door to the “closed” position is a free action, right?)
Ricki, when moving with Kamau, tell him about the traps – they might be obvious for you, but he might not have noticed them!
@LoneStarNorth: From turn 25: “CombatDoctor: I went and created a running map of the dungeon (https://lucid.app/documents/view/0b7c14d3-ba45-4f39-8c6b-c5fd256792c6) which I plan to keep updated regularly as we progress.” (Big thanks!) Can we please have that as pinned post or permanent link or something? Or could @CombatDoctor be so kind as to regularly post an “updated map at…”, please?
